What is PT-7M?
PT-7M is a corrosion-resistant alpha titanium alloy strengthened with a zirconium addition, developed as a chemical-service grade rather than a structural one. It delivers 370 MPa yield, 500 MPa tensile strength and 25 % elongation at 160 HB, with service to 350 °C, and is used mainly as thin-wall tube, sheet, plate and welded fabrications for acid and seawater duty. Weldability and corrosion resistance are its strong points (scores 88 and 88), but strength is low, it cannot be heat treated to higher levels, and machinability (38) is typical for titanium. Where Zr-bearing stock is unavailable, Pd-alloyed CP grades cover a similar service role. PT-7M has a density of 4.49 g/cm³ (0.162 lb/in³), lighter than 65% of titanium grades. It melts at 1,620°C (2,948 °F). PT-7M has a yield strength of 370 MPa (53.7 ksi) and a tensile strength of 500 MPa (72.5 ksi) — weaker than 76% of titanium grades. Elongation at break is 25% and the elastic modulus is 105 GPa (15.2 Msi).

Working with PT-7M
Is PT-7M easy to machine?
Machine like CP titanium: sharp uncoated carbide or coated inserts, low surface speed (25–45 m/min), heavy feed to avoid rubbing, flood coolant, never dwell — chips are gummy and work-harden the surface.
Can PT-7M be welded?
Excellent GTAW/plasma/EB weldability with matching or CP-Ti filler; needs full inert shielding plus trailing shield and clean, oxide-free edges, and interpass/backing gas below 150 ppm O2 to avoid embrittlement.
Can PT-7M be formed, bent or molded?
Good cold formability for thin-wall tube bending, expansion and deep drawing; allow generous bend radii (≈3–4 t), expect springback, and hot form at 550–700 °C for heavy sections followed by annealing at 600–680 °C.
PT-7M chemical composition (wt %)
Limits by weight percent from the governing specification, written the way the spec states them — a single maximum for impurities, a range for alloying elements, and the base element as balance. Nominal is the typical mid-range value.
| Element | Spec limit (wt %) | Nominal |
|---|---|---|
| Alalpha strengthener | 1.8 – 2.5 | 2.2 |
| Zrsolid-solution / corrosion improvement | 2 – 3 | 2.5 |
| Feimpurity limit | ≤ 0.25 | |
| Siimpurity limit | ≤ 0.12 | |
| Cimpurity limit | ≤ 0.1 | |
| Oimpurity limit | ≤ 0.12 | |
| Nimpurity limit | ≤ 0.04 | |
| Himpurity limit | ≤ 0.01 | |
| Ti | balance |
What surface finishes work on PT-7M?
Pickle in HNO3/HF to remove alpha-case and heat tint after annealing/welding; colour anodizing and passivation are straightforward, but the alloy galls easily so mating surfaces need PVD, anodic oxidation or solid-film lubricant.
