What is Ti-8Al-1Mo-1V?
Ti-8Al-1Mo-1V (UNS R54810, TA11) is a near-alpha titanium alloy with high aluminium content for creep resistance and stiffness, supplied in duplex-annealed, mill-annealed, solution-annealed, beta-annealed and STA conditions. Typical duplex-annealed properties are 950 MPa yield, 1000 MPa tensile, 15% elongation and about 315 HB (33 HRC), with service to 450 °C, which is why it was used for jet engine compressor blades and discs. The limits are ordered alpha-2 embrittlement in weld metal, poor cold formability (bend radii 4–5t) and very low machinability (score 18). Ti-6Al-2Sn-4Zr-2Mo-0.1Si serves hotter sections. Ti-8Al-1Mo-1V has a density of 4.37 g/cm³ (0.158 lb/in³), lighter than 99% of titanium grades. It melts at 1,540°C (2,804 °F). Ti-8Al-1Mo-1V has a yield strength of 950 MPa (138 ksi) and a tensile strength of 1,000 MPa (145 ksi) — stronger than 88% of titanium grades. Elongation at break is 15% and the elastic modulus is 124 GPa (18 Msi).

Working with Ti-8Al-1Mo-1V
Is Ti-8Al-1Mo-1V easy to machine?
Machine like a hard Ti alloy: rigid setup, sharp uncoated-carbide or PVD tools, 20–35 m/min, heavy flood coolant, positive rake and no dwelling to avoid work hardening and fire risk from fine chips.
Can Ti-8Al-1Mo-1V be welded?
GTAW/EBW/laser weldable with full inert shielding and trailing gas; weld metal ordered α₂-embrittles, so stress relieve 540–650 °C and avoid highly restrained joints in creep-loaded parts.
Can Ti-8Al-1Mo-1V be formed, bent or molded?
Cold formability is poor (bend radii ≥4–5 t); hot form or size at 700–870 °C, and forge at 900–980 °C for duplex-anneal microstructure or above the ~1040 °C β transus for beta-annealed parts.
