What is TA17?

TA17 is a low-alloy near-alpha titanium supplied as sheet, plate and bar, strengthened by modest alloy additions rather than by heat treatment and stocked in annealed, stress-relieved and as-welded conditions. Annealed material gives about 620 MPa yield, 730 MPa tensile, 16% elongation and 235 HB, and engineers pick it where CP titanium is too weak but weldability must stay high (weldability score 82). Service is limited to about 350 °C, machinability is poor (score 28) and there is no strengthening heat treatment; move to the TA15/BT20 class when higher strength is required. TA17 has a density of 4.48 g/cm³ (0.162 lb/in³), lighter than 71% of titanium grades. It melts at 1,650°C (3,002 °F). TA17 has a yield strength of 620 MPa (89.9 ksi) and a tensile strength of 730 MPa (106 ksi) — stronger than 50% of titanium grades. Elongation at break is 16% and the elastic modulus is 110 GPa (16 Msi).

What is TA17 used for?

  • Airframe sheet-metal panels and skins
  • Welded structural frames and brackets
  • Aircraft ducting and tube assemblies
  • Formed stiffeners and clips
  • Welded sheet enclosures and covers
  • Machined fittings from annealed bar

Working with TA17

Is TA17 easy to machine?

Low speed, heavy positive-rake carbide, rigid setup and flood coolant; avoid dwell and rubbing to prevent work hardening and fire risk from fine chips.

Can TA17 be welded?

Very good with GTAW, plasma or EBW using matching or CP-Ti filler under high-purity argon/trailing shield or vacuum; keep O/N/H pickup low and clean joints chemically before welding.

Can TA17 be formed, bent or molded?

Cold form in the annealed condition with generous bend radii (≈4–5t) and allow for springback; warm forming at 300–500 °C markedly improves formability and reduces residual stress.

TA17 — frequently asked

What is TA17 used for?

TA17 is typically used for airframe sheet-metal panels and skins, welded structural frames and brackets, aircraft ducting and tube assemblies, formed stiffeners and clips, welded sheet enclosures and covers and machined fittings from annealed bar. In short: weldable near-alpha sheet titanium; stronger than CP titanium; 350 °C service ceiling.

What is the yield strength of TA17?

TA17 has a typical yield strength of 620 MPa (89.9 ksi) and a tensile strength of 730 MPa (106 ksi) — stronger than 50% of titanium grades. Strength varies by condition: see the 5 listed tempers.

Is TA17 easy to machine?

Not especially — machinability is rated poor (28/100, better than 59% of titanium grades). Low speed, heavy positive-rake carbide, rigid setup and flood coolant; avoid dwell and rubbing to prevent work hardening and fire risk from fine chips.

Can TA17 be welded?

Yes — weldability is rated very good (82/100). Very good with GTAW, plasma or EBW using matching or CP-Ti filler under high-purity argon/trailing shield or vacuum; keep O/N/H pickup low and clean joints chemically before welding.

What surface finishes work on TA17?

Pickle in HNO3/HF to remove alpha case after hot work; colour anodize or thermally oxidise for anti-galling, and use dry-film lube or coatings where titanium-on-titanium contact occurs.

Can TA17 be formed, bent or molded?

Cold form in the annealed condition with generous bend radii (≈4–5t) and allow for springback; warm forming at 300–500 °C markedly improves formability and reduces residual stress.

What is the maximum service temperature of TA17?

TA17 is rated for continuous use to about 350°C (662 °F). Strength falls off well before that limit — check the elevated-temperature data for load-bearing parts.

What is the difference between TA17-M and TA17-Y?

M is the default condition — standard stocked condition: best combination of ductility, weldability and dimensional stability for structural sheet and plate. Y: choose for thin strip, tube and wire needing higher strength and straightness; ductility and weld ductility are reduced. Yield strength is 620 MPa in M versus 780 MPa in Y.
