What is TA15?
TA15 is a near-alpha titanium structural alloy (BT20 equivalent) valued for weldability, medium-high strength and good fracture toughness in airframes. Default values are 900 MPa yield, 990 MPa tensile, 12% elongation, 320 HB (33 HRC) and service to 500 °C, in sheet, plate, bar, forgings and welded assemblies (M, DA, BA, STA, SR, R, AW). Weldability is high (80) while formability (32) and machinability (18) are low, so panels are hot formed or superplastically formed. Ti-6Al-4V is the nearest alternative where welded joint efficiency matters less. TA15 has a density of 4.46 g/cm³ (0.161 lb/in³), lighter than 78% of titanium grades. It melts at 1,600°C (2,912 °F). TA15 has a yield strength of 900 MPa (131 ksi) and a tensile strength of 990 MPa (144 ksi) — stronger than 82% of titanium grades. Elongation at break is 12% and the elastic modulus is 115 GPa (16.7 Msi).

Working with TA15
Is TA15 easy to machine?
Machine like Ti-6Al-4V but slightly harder: rigid setup, sharp uncoated-carbide or PVD-coated tools, vc ≈ 25–45 m/min, high-pressure flood coolant, avoid dwell and light rubbing cuts to prevent work hardening and fire risk from fine chips.
Can TA15 be welded?
Very good weldability by GTAW, plasma and electron-beam with full inert (Ar/He) shielding or vacuum, matching TA15 filler, clean/degreased edges, low interpass temperature and 550–650 °C post-weld stress relief.
Can TA15 be formed, bent or molded?
Cold formability is limited (bend radii ≥4–5 t); hot forming at 750–900 °C or superplastic forming/diffusion bonding at ~900–930 °C is the normal route for panels and complex frames.

TA15 — frequently asked
What is TA15 used for?
TA15 is typically used for aircraft structural parts, welded fuselage components and pressure vessels. In short: weldable near-alpha airframe alloy; 500 °C structural capability; SPF/DB panel grade.
What is the yield strength of TA15?
TA15 has a typical yield strength of 900 MPa (131 ksi) and a tensile strength of 990 MPa (144 ksi) — stronger than 82% of titanium grades. Strength varies by condition: see the 6 listed tempers.
Is TA15 easy to machine?
Not especially — machinability is rated poor (18/100, worse than 83% of titanium grades).
Yes — weldability is rated very good (80/100). Very good weldability by GTAW, plasma and electron-beam with full inert (Ar/He) shielding or vacuum, matching TA15 filler, clean/degreased edges, low interpass temperature and 550–650 °C post-weld stress relief.

What is the maximum service temperature of TA15?
TA15 is rated for continuous use to about 500°C (932 °F). Strength falls off well before that limit — check the elevated-temperature data for load-bearing parts.
