Working with ERTi-9 AW-SR

Is ERTi-9 easy to machine?

Weld beads machine like Gr.9 base metal — low speed, high feed, sharp uncoated-carbide or PVD-coated tools and flood coolant to avoid galling and work hardening.

Can ERTi-9 be welded?

GTAW/GMAW/PAW/orbital with 99.995% Ar or Ar-He, trailing shield and full back purge; joint and wire must be degreased and kept below ~250 ppm O pickup — a silver/straw bead is acceptable, blue/grey/white is not.

Can ERTi-9 be formed, bent or molded?

Annealed wire bends and coils readily; drawn-to-size rod is straightened and cut, and welded Gr.9 tube can be cold bent to about 3–4 D after PWHT.

What surface finishes work on ERTi-9?

Pickle in HNO₃-HF or bead blast to remove alpha case and heat tint before service; colour anodising and passivation per ASTM F86 give good corrosion and ID marking.

ERTi-9 AW-SR — frequently asked

What is ERTi-9 AW-SR used for?

ERTi-9 AW-SR is typically used for aerospace hydraulic and pneumatic tubing welds, bicycle frame welding and racing exhaust systems. In short: standard Grade 9 tube filler; formability with added strength; orbital-weld friendly.

What is the yield strength of ERTi-9 AW-SR?

ERTi-9 AW-SR has a typical yield strength of 570 MPa (82.7 ksi) and a tensile strength of 680 MPa (98.6 ksi) — weaker than 52% of titanium grades. Strength varies by condition: see the 4 listed tempers.

Is ERTi-9 AW-SR easy to machine?

Not especially — machinability is rated poor (26/100, better than 57% of titanium grades). Weld beads machine like Gr.9 base metal — low speed, high feed, sharp uncoated-carbide or PVD-coated tools and flood coolant to avoid galling and work hardening.

Can ERTi-9 AW-SR be welded?

Yes — weldability is rated excellent (90/100). GTAW/GMAW/PAW/orbital with 99.995% Ar or Ar-He, trailing shield and full back purge; joint and wire must be degreased and kept below ~250 ppm O pickup — a silver/straw bead is acceptable, blue/grey/white is not.

What surface finishes work on ERTi-9 AW-SR?

Can ERTi-9 AW-SR be formed, bent or molded?

Annealed wire bends and coils readily; drawn-to-size rod is straightened and cut, and welded Gr.9 tube can be cold bent to about 3–4 D after PWHT.

What is the maximum service temperature of ERTi-9 AW-SR?

ERTi-9 AW-SR is rated for continuous use to about 315°C (599 °F). Strength falls off well before that limit — check the elevated-temperature data for load-bearing parts.

What is the difference between ERTi-9-AW and ERTi-9 CWSR?

AW is the default condition — default condition: all-weld-metal properties of ERTi-9 deposited with argon/helium shielding, trailing shield and back purge. CWSR: higher-strength, stiffer wire condition sometimes specified for cut-length rods that must resist bending or for matching CWSR Gr.9 tubing chemistry. Yield strength is 585 MPa in AW versus 790 MPa in CWSR.
