Working with XAR 500 QT-TUF
Is XAR 500 easy to machine?
Treat as ~50 HRC hardened steel: rigid setup, negative-rake carbide or CBN, low speed / adequate feed, flood coolant; prefer drilling by carbide-tipped or hard-metal drills, or plan holes by laser/waterjet.
Can XAR 500 be welded?
Weldable with low-hydrogen (H5) consumables of lower strength than base metal; preheat 150–200 °C (thicker/higher CEV to 200 °C), interpass ≤225 °C, control heat input and avoid restraint cracking — do not PWHT above the tempering temperature.
Can XAR 500 be formed, bent or molded?
Cold bending possible with punch radius ≥4–5×t (bend axis transverse to rolling direction), generous die opening and de-burred, ground edges; hot forming destroys the Q&T hardness.
What surface finishes work on XAR 500?
Blast and paint or apply zinc-rich primer for corrosion protection; no anodizing — for extreme wear, combine with chromium-carbide hardfacing overlays.

XAR 500 QT-TUF — frequently asked
What is XAR 500 QT-TUF used for?
XAR 500 QT-TUF is typically used for crusher liners, dump bodies and mining equipment wear parts. In short: 500 HB severe-abrasion plate; hardox 500 equivalent; still field-weldable.
What is the yield strength of XAR 500 QT-TUF?
XAR 500 QT-TUF has a typical yield strength of 1,350 MPa (196 ksi) and a tensile strength of 1,650 MPa (239 ksi) — stronger than 95% of steel grades. Strength varies by condition: see the 3 listed tempers.
Is XAR 500 QT-TUF easy to machine?
Not especially — machinability is rated not recommended (12/100, worse than 99% of steel grades). Treat as ~50 HRC hardened steel: rigid setup, negative-rake carbide or CBN, low speed / adequate feed, flood coolant; prefer drilling by carbide-tipped or hard-metal drills, or plan holes by laser/waterjet.
Can XAR 500 QT-TUF be welded?
With care — weldability is rated fair (48/100). Weldable with low-hydrogen (H5) consumables of lower strength than base metal; preheat 150–200 °C (thicker/higher CEV to 200 °C), interpass ≤225 °C, control heat input and avoid restraint cracking — do not PWHT above the tempering temperature.
