What is Fire-Retardant Resin?

Fire-Retardant Resin is an SLA/DLP photopolymer modified with halogenated or phosphorus-based flame retardants to pass UL94 V-0, offered as FR-V0, FR-V0-1.5 (1.5 mm rating), glass-filled FR-GF, tough, ESD and high-temperature variants. Engineers specify it for printed enclosures and interior components that must satisfy fire-safety codes, with 60 MPa tensile strength, 4 % elongation, 3.3 GPa modulus, 85 Shore D and 1.32 g/cm³ density. Service temperature reaches 100 °C, the highest in this resin set, but the filled matrix is brittle and abrasive (machinability score 45) and the V-0 rating depends on complete post-cure and on wall thickness. Where no flame rating is required, a standard tough resin is cheaper and less brittle. Fire-Retardant Resin has a density of 1.32 g/cm³ (0.0477 lb/in³), heavier than 72% of polymer grades. Its glass-transition temperature is 100°C (212 °F). Fire-Retardant Resin has a tensile strength of 60 MPa (8.7 ksi), stronger than 68% of polymer grades. Elongation at break is 4% and the elastic modulus is 3.3 GPa (0.479 Msi).

Working with Fire-Retardant Resin

Is Fire-Retardant Resin easy to machine?

Drills, taps and sands cleanly but is brittle and the mineral/FR filler is abrasive — use sharp carbide, light feeds, back the part up to stop chipping, and wear a mask for the dust.

Can Fire-Retardant Resin be welded?

Thermoset and unweldable; join with cyanoacrylate/2K epoxy or heat-staked/threaded inserts, and keep adhesives inside the rated wall thickness so the FR rating still holds.

Can Fire-Retardant Resin be formed, bent or molded?

Print at 385/405 nm with warmed (30–35 °C), well-stirred resin because the filler settles; expect 1–2 % cure shrinkage, then wash in IPA and give a full UV + thermal post-cure since the V-0 rating and HDT depend on complete conversion.

What surface finishes work on Fire-Retardant Resin?

Bead-blast or sand to a satin finish; the filled matrix will not polish to clarity, and any paint, primer or conformal coating must itself be fire-rated or the assembly loses its UL classification.

Fire-Retardant Resin — frequently asked

What is Fire-Retardant Resin used for?

Fire-Retardant Resin is typically used for electrical enclosures, aerospace interior mockups and rail/transit component prototypes. In short: UL94 V-0 printable resin; 100 °C service temperature; filled, brittle, abrasive.

What is the tensile strength of Fire-Retardant Resin?

Fire-Retardant Resin has a typical tensile strength of 60 MPa (8.7 ksi) — stronger than 68% of polymer grades. Strength varies by condition: see the 8 listed tempers.

Is Fire-Retardant Resin easy to machine?

Reasonably — machinability is rated fair (45/100, worse than 78% of polymer grades). Drills, taps and sands cleanly but is brittle and the mineral/FR filler is abrasive — use sharp carbide, light feeds, back the part up to stop chipping, and wear a mask for the dust.

Can Fire-Retardant Resin be welded?

What is the maximum service temperature of Fire-Retardant Resin?

Fire-Retardant Resin is rated for continuous use to about 100°C (212 °F), and briefly to 130°C. Strength falls off well before that limit — check the elevated-temperature data for load-bearing parts.

What is the difference between Fire-Retardant Resin FR-V0 and Fire-Retardant Resin FR-BR?

FR-V0 is the default condition — default choice for RoHS/halogen-free electronic enclosures and jigs that must show UL 94 V-0 at 3 mm. FR-BR: pick when the easiest, most robust V-0 rating is needed and halogen-free/RoHS-style restrictions do not apply.
