6082 (EN AW-6082, AlSi1MgMn) is a medium-to-high strength heat-treatable Al-Mg-Si alloy in which manganese controls grain structure, giving it the highest strength of the common 6000-series structural alloys and excellent corrosion resistance.

Compare all 12 conditionsHide
| Condition · open for datasheet | Best for | Yield MPa | Tensile MPa | Elong. % | Hardness | Conductivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Annealed | Pick for deep forming, severe bending or intermediate processing before re-solution treating and ageing. | 65 | 130 | 27 | 35 HB | 49 % IACS |
Slightly strain hardened | Soft supply condition for extrusions/plate that were straightened after annealing; forming stock with marginally higher strength than O. | 85 | 145 | 20 | 40 HB | 49 % IACS |
Solution heat treated and naturally aged by user | 6082 solution treated and naturally aged to a stable condition by the fabricator rather than the mill; mechanicals close to T4 with good formability before final ageing. | 120 | 215 | 17 | 62 HB | 38 % IACS |
T4, stress relieved by stretching | Low-distortion soft-temper plate for parts that will be machined and then artificially aged to T651. | 135 | 235 | 18 | 63 HB | 38 % IACS |
Solution heat treated and naturally aged | Choose when parts must be bent or formed after heat treatment and then aged to T6 (or left as-is for moderate strength with good ductility). | 140 | 240 | 17 | 65 HB | 38 % IACS |
Cooled from hot working and artificially aged | Press-quenched extrusion temper: cheaper than T6 with slightly lower strength; used for thin structural profiles. | 230 | 270 | 9 | 85 HB | 42 % IACS |
T6 variant, underaged | Deliberately underaged 6082 ageing cycle giving slightly lower strength than T6 but noticeably better ductility, toughness and bendability. | 235 | 290 | 12 | 88 HB | 42 % IACS |
Underaged (T61) plus stress relieved by stretching | Plate temper combining the T61 underaged cycle with controlled stretching, giving low residual stress and stable machining behaviour at near-T6 strength. | 240 | 290 | 11 | 90 HB | 42 % IACS |
Solution heat treated and artificially aged | Default structural temper: maximum strength for extrusions, bar and tube with good corrosion resistance and weldability. | 265 | 310 | 10 | 95 HB | 41 % IACS |
T6, heat treated by the user | Full T6-level properties re-developed by the fabricator after forming or welding of O/F material; strength and hardness essentially match mill T6. | 265 | 310 | 10 | 95 HB | 42 % IACS |
T6, stress relieved by stretching, minor straightening | Stress-relieved extruded bar/profile for precision machined parts that must not warp. | 275 | 315 | 10 | 96 HB | 41 % IACS |
T6, stress relieved by stretching | The standard machining plate temper — low residual stress so thick machined parts stay flat. | 285 | 325 | 10 | 98 HB | 41 % IACS |
What is 6082?
6082 (EN AW-6082, AlSi1MgMn) is a medium-to-high strength heat-treatable Al-Mg-Si alloy in which manganese controls grain structure, giving it the highest strength of the common 6000-series structural alloys and excellent corrosion resistance. It is the European workhorse for machined plate, extruded profiles, bridge and vehicle structures, and is largely interchangeable with 6061 in most designs. Limits are HAZ softening after welding (strength drops toward T4/O levels), poorer surface brightness on decorative anodizing than 6063, and reduced extrudability/thin-wall capability versus low-Mn 6000 alloys. 6082 has a density of 2.7 g/cm³ (0.0975 lb/in³), lighter than 59% of aluminum grades. It melts at 555°C (1,031 °F). 6082 has a yield strength of 265 MPa (38.4 ksi) and a tensile strength of 310 MPa (45 ksi) — stronger than 69% of aluminum grades. Elongation at break is 10% and the elastic modulus is 70 GPa (10.2 Msi).

Working with 6082
Is 6082 easy to machine?
Machines well in T6/T651 with sharp polished-flute carbide, high speed (300–1000 m/min) and generous coolant/air blast; softer T4/O tempers are gummy and tend to build up on the edge.
Can 6082 be welded?
Readily MIG/TIG welded with 5356 (higher strength/anodizing match) or 4043 (less cracking); expect HAZ strength to fall to roughly T4 level unless post-weld solution treated and re-aged.
Can 6082 be formed, bent or molded?
Form, bend and roll in O or T4 (T4 bend radius ≈ 1–2 t); T6 tolerates only mild bending at ≥3–4 t radius and springs back strongly — extrudability is lower than 6063 so thin, complex profiles are harder.

What surface finishes work on 6082?
Excellent for sulfuric and hard anodizing (wear layers to ~60 µm); clear decorative anodize looks greyish due to Mn/Si constituents, so use etch+colour anodize, powder coat or chromate/Ti conversion coating for cosmetic parts.
