What is 6262A?
6262A (AlMg1SiSn) is a free-machining Al-Mg-Si bar alloy in which tin replaces the lead of 6262 as the chip-breaking phase, so parts meet lead-restriction requirements. Tempers T6, T651, T6511, T8, T8511 and T9 give 275 MPa yield, 310 MPa tensile, 12 % elongation and a machinability rating of 88 for high-volume turned work. Welding is the main limit: the low-melting tin phase promotes hot cracking, so weldability rates 35, and formability (40) and the 150 °C service ceiling also restrict use. Choose 6061 where joints must be welded. 6262A has a density of 2.71 g/cm³ (0.0979 lb/in³), heavier than 51% of aluminum grades. It melts at 582°C (1,080 °F). 6262A has a yield strength of 275 MPa (39.9 ksi) and a tensile strength of 310 MPa (45 ksi) — stronger than 70% of aluminum grades. Elongation at break is 12% and the elastic modulus is 69.5 GPa (10.1 Msi).

Working with 6262A
Is 6262A easy to machine?
Excellent free-cutting behaviour: the soft Sn phase breaks chips so parts run at high feeds on CNC and multi-spindle lathes with polished-flute carbide tools; T8/T9 give the best finish and closest tolerances.
Can 6262A be welded?
Not recommended for structural welding — the low-melting Sn phase promotes hot cracking and weld porosity; use mechanical joining or, if welding is unavoidable, qualify GTAW with 4043/5356 filler on non-critical joints.
Can 6262A be formed, bent or molded?
Cold formability is limited in T6/T8/T9 (generous bend radii, avoid heavy staking); do severe forming in O or T4 and age afterwards, and keep hot-working temperatures below about 400 °C to avoid Sn-related hot shortness.

What surface finishes work on 6262A?
Clear and hard anodizing respond well and give good wear/corrosion protection; bright decorative anodizing or high-polish work can show faint speckle from Sn particles, and electroless nickel or chromate conversion are good alternatives.
