What is 6008?
6008 is a vanadium-modified Al-Mg-Si (6000 series) heat-treatable extrusion alloy, registered as A96008 / AlSiMgV. Engineers specify it where architectural profiles must run at high extrusion speed yet still reach 235 MPa yield and 270 MPa tensile with 12 % elongation, 90 HB and 190 W/m·K; it is supplied as extruded profiles, tube and bar in O, T4, T5, T6, T61, T64 and T66. Service is limited to about 150 °C, formability is moderate (T6 needs ≥3t bend radii) and fusion welding softens the heat-affected zone toward T4 strength. Where extrusion speed matters less than strength, 6061 or 6082 is the usual alternative. 6008 has a density of 2.7 g/cm³ (0.0975 lb/in³), lighter than 59% of aluminum grades. It melts at 585°C (1,085 °F). 6008 has a yield strength of 235 MPa (34.1 ksi) and a tensile strength of 270 MPa (39.2 ksi) — stronger than 61% of aluminum grades. Elongation at break is 12% and the elastic modulus is 69 GPa (10 Msi).

Working with 6008
Is 6008 easy to machine?
Machines freely in T5/T6 with sharp polished-flute carbide, high speed and generous coolant; T4/O tempers are gummy and tend to build up on edges.
Can 6008 be welded?
Readily GMAW/GTAW welded with 4043 (crack resistance) or 5356 (strength/anodizing match); expect HAZ softening to near-T4 levels unless post-weld aged.
Can 6008 be formed, bent or molded?
Extrudes at high speed thanks to the V-modified chemistry; form and hem in T4/T64, avoid tight-radius bending in T6 (use ≥3t radius).
