Working with 5254-H26
Is 5254 easy to machine?
Gummy like all soft 5000 series — use sharp polished high-rake carbide, high surface speed, generous non-chlorinated coolant to avoid built-up edge; keep tooling free of iron/copper contamination for peroxide service.
Can 5254 be welded?
Readily GTAW/GMAW welded with 5356 or 5654 filler (5654 preferred for peroxide purity); as-welded joint strength approaches the O-temper level, so design to annealed properties.
Can 5254 be formed, bent or molded?
Excellent cold formability in O/H32; allow generous bend radii in H34 and above and avoid heating above ~65 °C in service after forming to prevent β-phase sensitisation.
What surface finishes work on 5254?
Anodises clear or hard with good uniformity; chemical cleaning and passivation of the surface is normally required before hydrogen-peroxide service to remove embedded iron and machining debris.
