Working with 5049-H16

Is 5049 easy to machine?

Gummy in O/H1xx tempers — use sharp polished high-rake carbide, high speed, generous flood or MQL lubrication; harder H16–H38 tempers chip and finish better.

Can 5049 be welded?

Readily GMAW/GTAW welded with ER5356 or ER5183 filler; weld joint reverts to about O-temper strength (~190 MPa) in the HAZ, no post-weld heat treatment possible.

Can 5049 be formed, bent or molded?

Excellent cold formability in O/H111/H22; allow larger bend radii and consider grain-direction effects above H16, and avoid stretcher strain (Lüders) lines by using stabilized H2x/H3x tempers.

What surface finishes work on 5049?

Takes clear and hard anodizing well (slightly grey tone), plus chromate/chrome-free conversion coating, powder coat and paint; brazing is not recommended due to the Mg content.
