Working with 2A25-T651
Is 2A25 easy to machine?
Chips break well in T6 and the alloy takes high-speed milling; use sharp positive-rake tooling with emulsion coolant. Avoid machining in the annealed temper, where the material smears and builds up on the cutting edge.
Can 2A25 be welded?
Sensitive to hot cracking, so MIG and TIG welding are generally not recommended. Prefer mechanical fastening, riveting or friction stir welding, and re-solution treat and age after any welding.
Can 2A25 be formed, bent or molded?
Forge at about 420–470 °C, where hot workability is good. T6 leaves almost no cold-forming margin, so bending should be carried out in O or T4 and the part heat treated afterwards.
What surface finishes work on 2A25?
Hard anodize, or apply a chromate or chrome-free conversion coating as a paint base. The high copper content makes decorative anodizing dark and uneven in colour.

2A25-T651 — frequently asked
What is 2A25-T651 used for?
2A25-T651 is typically used for structural die forgings, thick plate for machined airframe fittings, highly loaded brackets and lugs, forged levers and links, machined bulkhead and joint fittings and plate for jig and fixture bodies. In short: high-strength 2000-series forging alloy; 2014A strength class; not fusion weldable.
What is the yield strength of 2A25-T651?
2A25-T651 has a typical yield strength of 400 MPa (58 ksi) and a tensile strength of 455 MPa (66 ksi) — stronger than 88% of aluminum grades. Strength varies by condition: see the 7 listed tempers.
Is 2A25-T651 easy to machine?
Yes — machinability is rated very good (72/100, better than 80% of aluminum grades). Chips break well in T6 and the alloy takes high-speed milling; use sharp positive-rake tooling with emulsion coolant. Avoid machining in the annealed temper, where the material smears and builds up on the cutting edge.
Can 2A25-T651 be welded?
Not readily — weldability is rated poor (25/100). Sensitive to hot cracking, so MIG and TIG welding are generally not recommended. Prefer mechanical fastening, riveting or friction stir welding, and re-solution treat and age after any welding.
What surface finishes work on 2A25-T651?
