Working with 2056-T351

Is 2056 easy to machine?

Machines like 2024 but Li-bearing chips are abrasive and reactive — use sharp carbide/PCD tools, high speed, generous coolant, and collect chips separately (do not mix with water-based sludge storage).

Can 2056 be welded?

Not suitable for conventional fusion welding (porosity, Li oxide, hot cracking); joined by riveting or friction stir welding, which is the intended process for Airware-type structures.

Can 2056 be formed, bent or molded?

Formed in T3/T4 or O condition; strong crystallographic texture makes properties directional, so plan bend lines relative to rolling direction and expect higher springback than 2024.

What surface finishes work on 2056?

Standard aerospace route: chromic or tartaric-sulfuric anodise plus chromate-free primer; clad or coated surfaces recommended for chloride exposure, decorative bright anodising is not achievable.

2056-T351 — frequently asked

What is 2056-T351 used for?

2056-T351 is typically used for fuselage skin sheet, damage-tolerant aerospace panels, pressurised cabin shell sections, friction-stir-welded skin assemblies, riveted airframe secondary structure and weight-reduction skin replacements. In short: damage-tolerant Al-Li sheet; lower density than 2024; friction-stir weld intended.

What is the yield strength of 2056-T351?

2056-T351 has a typical yield strength of 320 MPa (46.4 ksi) and a tensile strength of 450 MPa (65.3 ksi) — stronger than 80% of aluminum grades. Strength varies by condition: see the 7 listed tempers.

Is 2056-T351 easy to machine?

Reasonably — machinability is rated good (62/100, better than 55% of aluminum grades). Machines like 2024 but Li-bearing chips are abrasive and reactive — use sharp carbide/PCD tools, high speed, generous coolant, and collect chips separately (do not mix with water-based sludge storage).

Can 2056-T351 be welded?

Not readily — weldability is rated poor (25/100). Not suitable for conventional fusion welding (porosity, Li oxide, hot cracking); joined by riveting or friction stir welding, which is the intended process for Airware-type structures.

What surface finishes work on 2056-T351?

Standard aerospace route: chromic or tartaric-sulfuric anodise plus chromate-free primer; clad or coated surfaces recommended for chloride exposure, decorative bright anodising is not achievable.

Can 2056-T351 be formed, bent or molded?

Formed in T3/T4 or O condition; strong crystallographic texture makes properties directional, so plan bend lines relative to rolling direction and expect higher springback than 2024.

What is the maximum service temperature of 2056-T351?

2056-T351 is rated for continuous use to about 100°C (212 °F). Strength falls off well before that limit — check the elevated-temperature data for load-bearing parts.

What is the difference between 2056-T3 and 2056-O?

T3 is the default condition — standard damage-tolerant fuselage-skin condition: 2024-T3-class strength with lower density and slower fatigue crack growth. O: soft delivery/intermediate condition for severe forming; must be re-solution-treated and aged for service properties. Yield strength is 325 MPa in T3 versus 115 MPa in O.
