What is ASP 2030?

ASP 2030 is an Erasteel powder-metallurgy high-speed tool steel in which fine, evenly distributed alloy carbides provide wear resistance while keeping usable toughness. It is supplied soft-annealed (about 600 MPa yield, 950 MPa tensile, 12 % elongation, 300 HB, 225 GPa modulus) or vacuum-hardened to roughly 64–67 HRC, with a surface-treated variant on file, and is used for cutting tools, cold-work rolls and punches. Limits are practical: machinability rating is only 28 so cutting is done annealed, thermal conductivity is 24 W/m·K, annealed service temperature is around 300 °C, and there is no corrosion resistance. Böhler S390 is the nearer choice when higher hot hardness and wear resistance are required. ASP 2030 has a density of 8 g/cm³ (0.289 lb/in³), heavier than 95% of steel grades. It melts at 1,250°C (2,282 °F). ASP 2030 has a yield strength of 600 MPa (87 ksi) and a tensile strength of 950 MPa (138 ksi) — stronger than 77% of steel grades. Elongation at break is 12% and the elastic modulus is 225 GPa (32.6 Msi).

Working with ASP 2030

Is ASP 2030 easy to machine?

Machine only in the soft-annealed state with rigid setups, sharp carbide or cobalt-HSS tooling and low speeds; after hardening use CBN/diamond grinding, EDM or wire EDM (stress-relieve or re-temper after EDM).

Can ASP 2030 be welded?

Not a structural weld metal — repair only, with 450–500 °C preheat, matching HSS filler, and immediate tempering at 550–560 °C to avoid quench cracks.

Can ASP 2030 be formed, bent or molded?

Hot forge 1050–1150 °C with slow controlled cooling and full soft anneal (850–900 °C, slow cool) afterwards; no cold forming.

What surface finishes work on ASP 2030?

Takes a fine mirror polish thanks to the small, evenly distributed PM carbides; typically finished with steam oxide, nitriding or PVD TiN/TiAlN, and must be oiled or coated because it offers no inherent corrosion resistance.

Surface treatments FabDigit runs on steel parts — pick them in the quote configurator or call them out on the drawing. Each links to its datasheet in the surface-finish library (thickness, specs, call-out, material verdicts).

How much does ASP 2030 cost?

ASP 2030 is a high-cost steel ($$$$), pricier than about 78% of the materials FabDigit quotes. Part price depends far more on geometry, tolerance and quantity than on the raw stock — upload a CAD file for a live quote.
