What is 6CrW2Si?
6CrW2Si is a Cr-W-Si shock-resisting tool steel of the S1 type, supplied annealed, hot-rolled or cold-drawn and hardened to 40–43, 45–48, 50–52, 53–55 or 56–58 HRC. Annealed bar shows 450 MPa yield, 760 MPa tensile, 18% elongation and 240 HB, and the tungsten addition keeps toughness high at working hardness for hand and power tools that take repeated impact. Machinability (35) and cold formability (25) are low, corrosion resistance is nil and service temperature is limited to about 400 °C; the air-hardening S7-type 6CrMnSi2Mo1V is the alternative when distortion control matters. 6CrW2Si has a density of 7.85 g/cm³ (0.284 lb/in³), heavier than 56% of steel grades. It melts at 1,420°C (2,588 °F). 6CrW2Si has a yield strength of 450 MPa (65.3 ksi) and a tensile strength of 760 MPa (110 ksi) — stronger than 52% of steel grades. Elongation at break is 18% and the elastic modulus is 207 GPa (30 Msi).

Working with 6CrW2Si
Is 6CrW2Si easy to machine?
Machine in the annealed condition (≤285 HB) with rigid setups and cobalt-HSS or coated carbide; after hardening only grinding, EDM or CBN is practical.
Can 6CrW2Si be welded?
Weld only for repair: preheat 300–400 °C, use matched or tool-steel filler, keep interpass hot and re-temper immediately to avoid quench cracking.
Can 6CrW2Si be formed, bent or molded?
Hot forge 1050–1150 °C, stop above ~900 °C and cool slowly, then anneal 800–820 °C furnace-cool; cold forming is limited to mild bending of annealed stock.
