What is SKH59?

SKH59 is the JIS cobalt molybdenum high-speed steel equivalent to AISI M42, in which about 8 % Co and a high Mo content raise secondary hardness to working values of 64–70 HRC. It is selected for cutting hardened, tough or abrasive materials at high cutting speed, and is supplied as annealed and cold-drawn bar, drill and cutter blanks, and hardened or nitrided tool bodies. Cost is higher than M2 while toughness and grindability are lower, coatings and tempering must stay at or below about 500 °C to avoid over-tempering, and the 4 % Cr gives no corrosion resistance; where cost or impact resistance dominates, SKH51 (M2) is the alternative. SKH59 has a density of 7.98 g/cm³ (0.288 lb/in³), heavier than 94% of steel grades. It melts at 1,290°C (2,354 °F). SKH59 has a yield strength of 600 MPa (87 ksi) and a tensile strength of 900 MPa (131 ksi) — stronger than 77% of steel grades. Elongation at break is 12% and the elastic modulus is 225 GPa (32.6 Msi).

Working with SKH59

Is SKH59 easy to machine?

Machine only in the annealed condition with sharp, rigid setups and low speeds (≈25% of 1212 free-machining steel); after hardening, finish by grinding with SG/CBN wheels and generous coolant — grindability is poorer than M2 because of the Co and high Mo carbides.

Can SKH59 be welded?

Not a structural welding grade; repair or bimetal band-saw joining only by EB, laser or friction welding with preheat 500–550 °C and immediate re-temper to avoid quench cracks.

Can SKH59 be formed, bent or molded?

Hot work at 1050–1100 °C (stop above 900 °C) with slow furnace cooling and spheroidize anneal 850–870 °C; no meaningful cold formability.

What surface finishes work on SKH59?

Harden 1180–1200 °C in vacuum/salt, quench and triple temper 540–560 °C; finish with steam-oxide, black oxide, nitriding or TiN/TiAlN PVD (≤500 °C so as not to over-temper) and keep oiled — the 4% Cr does not make it stainless.

What is the yield strength of SKH59?

SKH59 has a typical yield strength of 600 MPa (87 ksi) and a tensile strength of 900 MPa (131 ksi) — stronger than 77% of steel grades. Strength varies by condition: see the 6 listed tempers.

Is SKH59 easy to machine?

Not especially — machinability is rated poor (25/100, worse than 93% of steel grades).

Not readily — weldability is rated poor (15/100). Not a structural welding grade; repair or bimetal band-saw joining only by EB, laser or friction welding with preheat 500–550 °C and immediate re-temper to avoid quench cracks.

What surface finishes work on SKH59?

What is the maximum service temperature of SKH59?

SKH59 is rated for continuous use to about 300°C (572 °F). Strength falls off well before that limit — check the elevated-temperature data for load-bearing parts.

What is the difference between SKH59-ANN and SKH59 QT68-70?

ANN is the default condition — standard stock condition for bar/blank supply — machine tool geometry, then harden and temper. QT68-70: high austenitizing (~1190–1200 °C) plus 540 °C tempers for maximum wear resistance on light, rigid, continuous cuts. Yield strength is 600 MPa in ANN versus 2,000 MPa in QT68-70.
