What is Böhler S390?
Böhler S390 is a cobalt-alloyed powder-metallurgy high-speed steel containing about 4.8 % vanadium as hard carbides, giving high wear resistance and hot hardness within the PM-HSS family. It is stocked annealed (roughly 700 MPa yield, 1000 MPa tensile, 10 % elongation, 300 HB) and hardened to 64–66, 66–68 or 68–70 HRC, with a PVD-coated condition on file, for drills, milling cutters and broaches. The trade-offs are low machinability (rating 25, annealed only), thermal conductivity of 24 W/m·K and no corrosion resistance. ASP 2030 is the alternative when more toughness and easier grinding matter more than peak wear resistance. Böhler S390 has a density of 8 g/cm³ (0.289 lb/in³), heavier than 95% of steel grades. It melts at 1,260°C (2,300 °F). Böhler S390 has a yield strength of 700 MPa (102 ksi) and a tensile strength of 1,000 MPa (145 ksi) — stronger than 81% of steel grades. Elongation at break is 10% and the elastic modulus is 230 GPa (33.4 Msi).

Working with Böhler S390
Is Böhler S390 easy to machine?
Machine only in the soft-annealed state with rigid setups, low speeds and carbide or coated-carbide tooling; after hardening the 4.8 % V carbides make CBN/diamond grinding the only practical route.
Can Böhler S390 be welded?
Not intended for structural welding; repair only by TIG/laser with matching PM-HSS filler, 450–500 °C preheat and immediate re-temper.
Can Böhler S390 be formed, bent or molded?
Hot forge 1100–900 °C with slow furnace cooling and soft anneal at 850–900 °C; no cold forming.
