What is 1.2363?
1.2363 (X100CrMoV5-1, AISI A2) is an air-hardening high-carbon 5% chromium cold-work tool steel with molybdenum and vanadium additions. Engineers choose it for punches and cutting dies where dimensional stability through hardening matters; it is available as annealed and precision-ground bar and plate (220 HB, 790 MPa tensile, 500 MPa yield, 16% elongation), in ESR quality, and heat treated from 54–56 up to 60–62 HRC, or 62–64 HRC with deep cryogenic treatment. Limits are low formability (score 15), repair-only welding, no corrosion resistance and a listed maximum service temperature of 400 °C; 1.2379 (D2) gives more wear resistance, 1.2842 (O2) is the lower-cost oil-hardening option. 1.2363 has a density of 7.86 g/cm³ (0.284 lb/in³), heavier than 90% of steel grades. It melts at 1,400°C (2,552 °F). 1.2363 has a yield strength of 500 MPa (72.5 ksi) and a tensile strength of 790 MPa (115 ksi) — stronger than 63% of steel grades. Elongation at break is 16% and the elastic modulus is 205 GPa (29.7 Msi).

Working with 1.2363
Is 1.2363 easy to machine?
Machine fully in the annealed condition with rigid setups and coated carbide; hardened tools require grinding, EDM or CBN, and EDM'd surfaces should be stoned and stress-relieved.
Can 1.2363 be welded?
Only repair welding with matched 5%Cr filler: preheat 300–400 °C, weld hot, then temper 25 °C below the previous tempering temperature.
Can 1.2363 be formed, bent or molded?
Hot work 1050→850 °C with slow furnace cooling; cold forming is impractical — shape by machining, then air harden from 940–980 °C for near-zero distortion.
