What is 28Mn6?

28Mn6 (1.1170, 30Mn2) is a non-alloy special steel of about 0.28 % C with raised manganese for deeper hardenability, supplied within the EN 10083 quenched-and-tempered family. It is chosen for larger forgings and bar parts that must through-harden beyond plain C35E; the default +QT condition gives 540 MPa yield, 780 MPa tensile, 16 % elongation and 235 HB (21 HRC). Section-graded +QT classes (≤16 mm, 40–100 mm, 100–160 mm) plus +A, +N, +NT and +C are on file. Welding needs preheat at CEV ≈ 0.55–0.65 and service is capped near 400 °C; for heavier sections move to 34CrMo4. 28Mn6 has a density of 7.85 g/cm³ (0.284 lb/in³), heavier than 56% of steel grades. It melts at 1,425°C (2,597 °F). 28Mn6 has a yield strength of 540 MPa (78.3 ksi) and a tensile strength of 780 MPa (113 ksi) — stronger than 70% of steel grades. Elongation at break is 16% and the elastic modulus is 210 GPa (30.5 Msi).

Working with 28Mn6

Is 28Mn6 easy to machine?

Machine in +A or +N (≤220 HB) for best tool life; in +QT (~235 HB) use coated carbide, 120–180 m/min, rigid setups and generous coolant.

Can 28Mn6 be welded?

CEV ≈ 0.55–0.65: preheat 150–250 °C, use low-hydrogen consumables and stress-relieve/temper at 550–650 °C after welding.

Can 28Mn6 be formed, bent or molded?

Hot forge 1100–850 °C then normalize; cold bending only in +A/+N condition with generous radii — +QT bar is essentially non-formable.
