Working with 5554-O

Is 5554 easy to machine?

Soft and gummy — use sharp polished high-rake carbide, high surface speed and flood coolant or emulsion to stop chip welding.

Can 5554 be welded?

Designed as filler: GMAW/GTAW 5554 on 5454 (and other Mg<3% 5000 series) for service to ~150 °C; use argon, DCEP spray or AC TIG, and keep 5356/5183 away from hot service joints.

Can 5554 be formed, bent or molded?

Annealed and H32 sheet form readily; allow generous bend radii in H34 and expect springback typical of Al-Mg.

What surface finishes work on 5554?

Takes clear and hard anodize well and paints/powder-coats with a chromate-free pretreatment; weld beads may shade slightly differently from base metal after anodizing.

5554-O is typically used for elevated-temperature tank welding, wheel fabrication welds and chemical process equipment. In short: filler for 5454; hot-service 5000-series consumable; no sensitization above 65 C.

What is the yield strength of 5554-O?

5554-O has a typical yield strength of 117 MPa (17 ksi) and a tensile strength of 250 MPa (36.3 ksi) — weaker than 78% of aluminum grades. Strength varies by condition: see the 5 listed tempers.

Is 5554-O easy to machine?

Not especially — machinability is rated fair (35/100, worse than 86% of aluminum grades). Soft and gummy — use sharp polished high-rake carbide, high surface speed and flood coolant or emulsion to stop chip welding.

Can 5554-O be welded?

Yes — weldability is rated excellent (92/100). Designed as filler: GMAW/GTAW 5554 on 5454 (and other Mg<3% 5000 series) for service to ~150 °C; use argon, DCEP spray or AC TIG, and keep 5356/5183 away from hot service joints.

What is the maximum service temperature of 5554-O?

5554-O is rated for continuous use to about 150°C (302 °F). Strength falls off well before that limit — check the elevated-temperature data for load-bearing parts.

What is the difference between 5554 AS-WELDED and 5554-H34?

AS-WELDED is the default condition — default condition for a filler alloy: properties of the deposited bead when welding 5454 or other 5000-series base metal. H34: higher-strength stabilized sheet for wheel rims and pressure-vessel shells where less forming is needed. Yield strength is 125 MPa in AS-WELDED versus 220 MPa in H34.
