Working with 5088-H36
Is 5088 easy to machine?
Machines like other high-Mg 5000 series: gummy in O/H111, better in H34/H38 — use sharp polished high-rake carbide, high speed, generous coolant/lubricant to prevent built-up edge.
Can 5088 be welded?
Excellent GMAW/GTAW and friction-stir weldability with 5183 or 5356 filler; keep interpass temperature low and avoid long exposure at 70–200 °C to prevent β-phase sensitization.
Can 5088 be formed, bent or molded?
Best formed in O/H111; H116/H321 plate takes moderate bends (allow generous inside radius across the rolling direction); watch for Lüders/stretcher-strain marks on annealed sheet.
What surface finishes work on 5088?
Responds well to sulfuric-acid clear and hard anodizing (slightly grey tone from Mg), chemical conversion coating and marine paint systems; polishes to a satin rather than mirror finish.

5088-H36 — frequently asked
What is 5088-H36 used for?
5088-H36 is typically used for marine structural components, automotive structural sheet, welded hull and deck plate, vehicle body reinforcements, offshore walkways and platforms and storage tank shells. What is the yield strength of 5088-H36?
5088-H36 has a typical yield strength of 310 MPa (45 ksi) and a tensile strength of 385 MPa (55.8 ksi) — stronger than 78% of aluminum grades. Strength varies by condition: see the 11 listed tempers.
Is 5088-H36 easy to machine?
Reasonably — machinability is rated fair (52/100, worse than 63% of aluminum grades). Machines like other high-Mg 5000 series: gummy in O/H111, better in H34/H38 — use sharp polished high-rake carbide, high speed, generous coolant/lubricant to prevent built-up edge.
Can 5088-H36 be welded?
