Working with 2198-O

Is 2198 easy to machine?

Machines like a hard 2000 series: sharp polished-flute carbide, high speed, generous coolant; T8/T851 gives good chip control, but keep Li-bearing fines wet and segregated from other Al swarf.

Can 2198 be welded?

Not recommended for conventional MIG/TIG (hot cracking, Li oxidation); friction stir welding and laser beam welding with 4047/4000-series-type filler are the qualified joining routes, otherwise rivet/bolt.

Can 2198 be formed, bent or molded?

Form in T3/T4/O; T8 has limited bend ductility and pronounced planar anisotropy, so orient blanks to rolling direction and allow generous bend radii.

What surface finishes work on 2198?

Standard aerospace chain: alkaline clean, deoxidize, tartaric-sulfuric or chromic anodize, chromate-free conversion coat plus epoxy primer; avoid bare contact with steel or CFRP without sealant.

2198-O — frequently asked

What is 2198-O used for?

2198-O is typically used for fuselage skin, aerospace sheet structure, laser-welded stiffened skin panels, lower wing skin panels, formed frames and clips and extruded stringers for welded panels. In short: most formable Al-Li sheet here; weight saving over 2024; laser and FSW weldable.

What is the yield strength of 2198-O?

2198-O has a typical yield strength of 130 MPa (18.9 ksi) and a tensile strength of 250 MPa (36.3 ksi) — weaker than 73% of aluminum grades. Strength varies by condition: see the 8 listed tempers.

Is 2198-O easy to machine?

Not especially — machinability is rated fair (40/100, worse than 81% of aluminum grades). Machines like a hard 2000 series: sharp polished-flute carbide, high speed, generous coolant; T8/T851 gives good chip control, but keep Li-bearing fines wet and segregated from other Al swarf.

Can 2198-O be welded?

Not readily — weldability is rated poor (30/100). Not recommended for conventional MIG/TIG (hot cracking, Li oxidation); friction stir welding and laser beam welding with 4047/4000-series-type filler are the qualified joining routes, otherwise rivet/bolt.

What surface finishes work on 2198-O?

Standard aerospace chain: alkaline clean, deoxidize, tartaric-sulfuric or chromic anodize, chromate-free conversion coat plus epoxy primer; avoid bare contact with steel or CFRP without sealant.

Can 2198-O be formed, bent or molded?

Form in T3/T4/O; T8 has limited bend ductility and pronounced planar anisotropy, so orient blanks to rolling direction and allow generous bend radii.

What is the maximum service temperature of 2198-O?

2198-O is rated for continuous use to about 120°C (248 °F). Strength falls off well before that limit — check the elevated-temperature data for load-bearing parts.

What is the difference between 2198-T8 and 2198-O?

T8 is the default condition — standard supply condition for 2198 fuselage/skin sheet: peak-strength, damage-tolerant, corrosion-stable. O: softest condition for severe forming or intermediate processing; must be re-solution treated and aged for service strength. Yield strength is 430 MPa in T8 versus 130 MPa in O.
