Working with 2048-T351
Is 2048 easy to machine?
Machines very well in T851 with sharp carbide tools, high speed and flood coolant; chips break cleanly, but leave stress-symmetric stock removal on thick plate to limit distortion.
Can 2048 be welded?
Not recommended for fusion welding (hot-cracking and loss of T8 properties); join by riveting, bolting, adhesive bonding or friction stir welding with qualified procedures.
Can 2048 be formed, bent or molded?
Form in O or freshly quenched W temper; T851 plate tolerates only mild bending with generous radii, so most parts are machined from plate.
What surface finishes work on 2048?
Chromic or sulfuric anodize plus primer, or Alclad/ion-vapour-deposited Al coating, is normal; bare surfaces pit in chloride service and colour anodizing is dull due to copper.

2048-T351 — frequently asked
What is 2048-T351 used for?
2048-T351 is typically used for aircraft structural plate, machined spacers and fittings, bulkheads and frames, wing ribs and shear webs, landing-gear support brackets and access-door and panel backing structure. In short: tough 2000-series airframe plate; good-machining structural alloy; machined, not formed.
What is the yield strength of 2048-T351?
2048-T351 has a typical yield strength of 275 MPa (39.9 ksi) and a tensile strength of 425 MPa (61.6 ksi) — stronger than 70% of aluminum grades. Strength varies by condition: see the 5 listed tempers.

Reasonably — machinability is rated good (65/100, better than 62% of aluminum grades). Machines very well in T851 with sharp carbide tools, high speed and flood coolant; chips break cleanly, but leave stress-symmetric stock removal on thick plate to limit distortion.
Can 2048-T351 be welded?
Not readily — weldability is rated poor (20/100). Not recommended for fusion welding (hot-cracking and loss of T8 properties); join by riveting, bolting, adhesive bonding or friction stir welding with qualified procedures.
What surface finishes work on 2048-T351?
