| Condition · open for datasheet | Best for | Yield MPa | Tensile MPa | Elong. % | Hardness | Conductivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Stress relieved | Use for dimensionally critical machined castings (housings, machine bases) to remove casting/welding residual stress with minimal loss of strength. | 505 | 730 | 5 | 21 HRC | 2.9 % IACS |
AS-CASTDefault no post-cast heat treatment | Standard commercial condition: pearlite promoted by Cu/Mn alloying and controlled cooling; cheapest way to meet 100-70-03. | 520 | 760 | 4 | 23 HRC | — |
Flame or Induction Surface Hardened | Select for gear teeth, journals and slideways needing a hard wear surface and compressive residual stress while keeping a tough pearlitic core. | 520 | 760 | 3 | 52 HRC | 2.9 % IACS |

Quenched and tempered | Pick for the highest through-strength and wear resistance in the 100-70-03 family (tempered martensite matrix), at the cost of machinability and distortion risk. | 620 | 860 | 3 | 30 HRC | — |
What is A536 100-70-03?
ASTM A536 100-70-03 is a pearlitic ductile (nodular) iron (EN-GJS-700-2, QT700-2, FCD700, GGG70, 0.7070) supplied as-cast, normalized and tempered, or quenched and tempered. It provides 760 MPa tensile, 520 MPa yield, 4 % elongation and 241 HB (23 HRC) with service to 400 °C, so it suits highly loaded shafts and wear surfaces that ferritic grades cannot carry. Ductility and machinability (score 55) are lower than 65-45-12, and welding is repair-only. Use 80-55-06 when more elongation is needed, or austempered ductile iron for higher strength with better toughness. A536 100-70-03 has a density of 7.1 g/cm³ (0.257 lb/in³), lighter than 99% of steel grades. It melts at 1,150°C (2,102 °F). A536 100-70-03 has a yield strength of 520 MPa (75.4 ksi) and a tensile strength of 760 MPa (110 ksi) — stronger than 67% of steel grades. Elongation at break is 4% and the elastic modulus is 169 GPa (24.5 Msi).

Advantages
- Low embodied carbon — 1.7 kg CO₂/kg, better than 99% of steel grades
Limitations

Working with A536 100-70-03
Is A536 100-70-03 easy to machine?
Machines well with carbide or ceramic at 120–250 m/min dry; graphite nodules break chips, but carbide edges wear faster than on ferritic grades and hard casting skin/carbides should be taken in one deep first cut.
Can A536 100-70-03 be welded?
Poor weldability — use NiFe (ENiFe-CI) electrodes, 300–400 °C preheat, short low-heat stringer beads with peening, then stress relieve; structural welding is generally avoided in favour of repair welding only.
Can A536 100-70-03 be formed, bent or molded?
Green-sand or shell mould casting with Mg treatment and late inoculation; keep section modulus adequate for nodularity and use risers/chills to avoid shrinkage and carbide in thin sections.
