What is A48 Class 20?

ASTM A48 Class 20 is the lowest-strength gray cast iron in the A48 family (equivalent to HT150, FC150, EN-GJL-150, GG15, 0.6010), with a high flake-graphite content in the as-cast matrix. It is chosen for lightly loaded sand castings where vibration damping and easy machining matter more than strength: 152 MPa tensile, 0.5 % elongation, 156 HB, 80 GPa modulus, 53 W/m·K conductivity and use to 350 °C. It is brittle with no useful ductility, difficult to weld, and unprotected surfaces rust. Class 30 or 35 is the alternative when more strength is needed. A48 Class 20 has a density of 7.1 g/cm³ (0.257 lb/in³), lighter than 99% of steel grades. It melts at 1,150°C (2,102 °F). A48 Class 20 has a tensile strength of 152 MPa (22 ksi), weaker than 100% of steel grades. Elongation at break is 0.5% and the elastic modulus is 80 GPa (11.6 Msi).

Working with A48 Class 20

Is A48 Class 20 easy to machine?

Among the easiest ferrous materials to cut — dry machining with carbide or ceramic, high speeds, short abrasive chips; watch out for hard chill at thin edges and for abrasive sand skin on the first pass.

Can A48 Class 20 be welded?

Poor weldability: preheat 300–400 °C, use ENi-CI/ENiFe-CI electrodes or braze-weld, peen and cool slowly to avoid a hard martensitic HAZ and cracking; repair welding only.

Can A48 Class 20 be formed, bent or molded?

No cold forming; produced by green sand or shell moulding — high fluidity and near-zero shrinkage make thin, complex sections easy, keep wall ≥4–5 mm to avoid chill.

What surface finishes work on A48 Class 20?

Shot blast then prime/paint or enamel for corrosion protection; graphite flakes prevent a true mirror polish, and electroplating requires careful pre-cleaning to strip surface graphite.
