Working with S82012-ANN

Is S82012 easy to machine?

Treat like 2205 but tougher than austenitics: rigid setups, positive-rake coated carbide, ~20–30 % lower surface speed than 304, heavy constant feed and flood coolant to cut under the work-hardened layer.

Can S82012 be welded?

GTAW/GMAW/FCAW with over-alloyed duplex filler (2209/2307 type) or a nickel-boosted lean-duplex wire, heat input roughly 0.5–2.0 kJ/mm, interpass below ~150 °C, no preheat and no PWHT; check ferrite 35–65 % on weld and HAZ.

Can S82012 be formed, bent or molded?

Cold forms well but needs ~2× the press force of 304 and generous overbend for springback; hot work 1000–1150 °C with fast cooling, and always re-solution anneal (1000–1100 °C, water quench) after hot forming.

What surface finishes work on S82012?

Pickle/passivate per ASTM A380/A967 (nitric-HF or citric) after welding, remove heat tint by grinding or pickling paste; electropolishes and mechanically polishes reasonably, but the two-phase structure can etch unevenly — not anodisable.

S82012-ANN — frequently asked

What is S82012-ANN used for?

S82012-ANN is typically used for bar and shape stock, fasteners, structural components and storage equipment. In short: low-nickel lean duplex; tight C and N variant; 35% annealed elongation.

What is the yield strength of S82012-ANN?

S82012-ANN has a typical yield strength of 520 MPa (75.4 ksi) and a tensile strength of 700 MPa (102 ksi) — stronger than 79% of stainless steel grades. Strength varies by condition: see the 2 listed tempers.

Is S82012-ANN easy to machine?

Not especially — machinability is rated poor (33/100, worse than 57% of stainless steel grades). Treat like 2205 but tougher than austenitics: rigid setups, positive-rake coated carbide, ~20–30 % lower surface speed than 304, heavy constant feed and flood coolant to cut under the work-hardened layer.

Can S82012-ANN be welded?

Yes — weldability is rated very good (70/100).

Can S82012-ANN be formed, bent or molded?

Cold forms well but needs ~2× the press force of 304 and generous overbend for springback; hot work 1000–1150 °C with fast cooling, and always re-solution anneal (1000–1100 °C, water quench) after hot forming.

What is the maximum service temperature of S82012-ANN?

S82012-ANN is rated for continuous use to about 300°C (572 °F). Strength falls off well before that limit — check the elevated-temperature data for load-bearing parts.

What is the difference between S82012-ANN and S82012-CD?

ANN is the default condition — standard supply condition for plate, sheet, bar and tube; best ductility, phase balance and corrosion resistance. CD: pick for straight, close-tolerance bar and wire where extra strength and surface finish are wanted; ductility and impact toughness drop. Yield strength is 520 MPa in ANN versus 700 MPa in CD.
