What is ERNiFeCr-1?

ERNiFeCr-1 is an age-hardenable, Nb-bearing Ni-Fe-Cr filler wire (UNS N07718) matched to Alloy 718 base metal, used to preserve high-temperature strength in gas turbine and aerospace repairs. It is supplied as cold-drawn wire for GTAW, GMAW and laser welding and can be post-weld solution treated and aged (STA-954, STA-1065) to reach roughly 540 MPa yield, 860 MPa tensile, 28% elongation and 245 HB (24 HRC). Service is limited to about 600 °C and machinability is low (score 25). The deposit is sensitive to Laves-phase segregation and HAZ liquation cracking, so heat input and interpass temperature must be controlled. ERNiFeCr-1 has a density of 8.19 g/cm³ (0.296 lb/in³), lighter than 68% of nickel alloy grades. It melts at 1,260°C (2,300 °F). ERNiFeCr-1 has a yield strength of 540 MPa (78.3 ksi) and a tensile strength of 860 MPa (125 ksi) — stronger than 78% of nickel alloy grades. Elongation at break is 28% and the elastic modulus is 200 GPa (29 Msi).

Working with ERNiFeCr-1

Is ERNiFeCr-1 easy to machine?

Machine in the solution-annealed state where possible; aged deposits at 40+ HRC need rigid setups, ceramic or coated carbide, low speed/heavy feed and flood coolant to avoid work hardening.

Can ERNiFeCr-1 be welded?

GTAW/GMAW/laser with 100% Ar (add 2–5% He for penetration), low heat input, interpass <150 °C to limit Laves-phase segregation and HAZ liquation cracking; keep the filler clean and dry.

Can ERNiFeCr-1 be formed, bent or molded?

Wire drawing and cold bending are done in the annealed state; cold work rapidly raises strength, so intermediate anneals are required for large deformation.

What surface finishes work on ERNiFeCr-1?

Pickle or bead-blast the weld to remove Cr/Ti oxide before aging or inspection; not anodizable — electropolish or passivate for cleanliness, and consider aluminide/thermal-barrier coatings for hot-section service.
