Working with ERNiFeCr-1-SOL

Is ERNiFeCr-1 easy to machine?

Machine in the solution-annealed state where possible; aged deposits at 40+ HRC need rigid setups, ceramic or coated carbide, low speed/heavy feed and flood coolant to avoid work hardening.

Can ERNiFeCr-1 be welded?

GTAW/GMAW/laser with 100% Ar (add 2–5% He for penetration), low heat input, interpass <150 °C to limit Laves-phase segregation and HAZ liquation cracking; keep the filler clean and dry.

Can ERNiFeCr-1 be formed, bent or molded?

Wire drawing and cold bending are done in the annealed state; cold work rapidly raises strength, so intermediate anneals are required for large deformation.

What surface finishes work on ERNiFeCr-1?

Pickle or bead-blast the weld to remove Cr/Ti oxide before aging or inspection; not anodizable — electropolish or passivate for cleanliness, and consider aluminide/thermal-barrier coatings for hot-section service.

ERNiFeCr-1-SOL — frequently asked

What is ERNiFeCr-1-SOL used for?

ERNiFeCr-1-SOL is typically used for gas turbine component repair, aerospace superalloy fabrication and 718 fastener/hardware welding. In short: alloy 718-matched filler; age-hardenable weld deposit; hot-section repair standard.

What is the yield strength of ERNiFeCr-1-SOL?

ERNiFeCr-1-SOL has a typical yield strength of 450 MPa (65.3 ksi) and a tensile strength of 900 MPa (131 ksi) — stronger than 66% of nickel alloy grades. Strength varies by condition: see the 5 listed tempers.

Is ERNiFeCr-1-SOL easy to machine?

Not especially — machinability is rated poor (25/100, better than 76% of nickel alloy grades). Machine in the solution-annealed state where possible; aged deposits at 40+ HRC need rigid setups, ceramic or coated carbide, low speed/heavy feed and flood coolant to avoid work hardening.

Can ERNiFeCr-1-SOL be welded?

Yes — weldability is rated very good (70/100). GTAW/GMAW/laser with 100% Ar (add 2–5% He for penetration), low heat input, interpass <150 °C to limit Laves-phase segregation and HAZ liquation cracking; keep the filler clean and dry.

What surface finishes work on ERNiFeCr-1-SOL?

Can ERNiFeCr-1-SOL be formed, bent or molded?

Wire drawing and cold bending are done in the annealed state; cold work rapidly raises strength, so intermediate anneals are required for large deformation.

What is the maximum service temperature of ERNiFeCr-1-SOL?

ERNiFeCr-1-SOL is rated for continuous use to about 550°C (1,022 °F). Strength falls off well before that limit — check the elevated-temperature data for load-bearing parts.

What is the difference between ERNiFeCr-1-AW and ERNiFeCr-1 STA-954?

AW is the default condition — default reported condition for the deposit: use when the joint sees only moderate stress/temperature or when PWHT is impossible. STA-954: standard aerospace weldment condition when fine grain size and best low-cycle fatigue/notch ductility are required. Yield strength is 540 MPa in AW versus 1,080 MPa in STA-954.
