Compare all 4 conditionsHide
| Condition · open for datasheet | Best for | Yield MPa | Tensile MPa | Elong. % | Hardness | Conductivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Annealed | Choose when maximum dimensional stability and lowest residual stress after heavy machining are more important than strength. | 112 | 265 | 15 | 64 HB | 29 % IACS |
As fabricated | Pick for thick cast slabs bought before stress relief, where the buyer performs their own thermal stabilisation. | 115 | 260 | 10 | 67 HB | 29 % IACS |
As-cast, stress-relieved and precision-milled cast plate | Default stocked cast-plate condition: low residual stress and tight flatness for machined tooling, vacuum chambers and machine bases. | 125 | 270 | 12 | 70 HB | 29 % IACS |
Slightly strain hardened | Occasionally offered when cast slab receives light rolling/levelling before machining; marginally higher yield than as-cast. | 135 | 280 | 13 | 73 HB | 29 % IACS |
What is EN AW-5083 Cast Plate?
EN AW-5083 cast plate is the continuously/direct-chill cast, stress-relieved and double-side precision-milled form of the high-magnesium (about 4.5 % Mg) non-heat-treatable Al–Mg alloy. Engineers specify it for vacuum chambers, mould and tooling plates, machine bases and large fixtures where low residual stress, good flatness and predictable machining matter; through-thickness structure is more uniform than rolled plate, so parts move less after cutting. Strength and elongation are slightly below rolled 5083 and the product is not intended for cold forming. Keep service below about 65 °C to avoid β-phase (Al3Mg2) precipitation and stress-corrosion cracking; high Mg also makes it unbrazeable and prone to grain marking when polished. EN AW-5083 Cast Plate has a density of 2.66 g/cm³ (0.0961 lb/in³), lighter than 84% of aluminum grades. It melts at 574°C (1,065 °F). EN AW-5083 Cast Plate has a yield strength of 125 MPa (18.1 ksi) and a tensile strength of 270 MPa (39.2 ksi) — weaker than 75% of aluminum grades. Elongation at break is 12% and the elastic modulus is 71 GPa (10.3 Msi).

Working with EN AW-5083 Cast Plate
Is EN AW-5083 Cast Plate easy to machine?
Machines predictably but gummy: use sharp polished-flute carbide, high rake, 300–900 m/min, generous flood or MQL coolant to avoid built-up edge and stringy chips.
Can EN AW-5083 Cast Plate be welded?
Excellent with GMAW/GTAW using ER5183 or ER5356 filler; no preheat above 120 °C, keep interpass low and avoid post-weld exposure over 65 °C to prevent sensitisation.
Can EN AW-5083 Cast Plate be formed, bent or molded?
Cast plate is a machining stock — avoid bending or deep drawing; hot forming above 250 °C only, and any cold work should be followed by stress relief to restore flatness.
Manufacturability
The process limits FabDigit applies to EN AW-5083 Cast Plate. Every EN AW-5083 Cast Plate part is priced by an engineer; design inside these and the quote comes back without a redesign loop.
