Working with 2090-T86

Is 2090 easy to machine?

Machines much like 2024-T3 with sharp carbide tooling, high speed and flood coolant; Li-bearing fines are reactive, so avoid dry grinding and collect swarf wet.

Can 2090 be welded?

Fusion welding is not recommended (Li oxide films, hydrogen porosity, hot cracking); joints are riveted, bonded or friction-stir welded.

Can 2090 be formed, bent or molded?

Form in O or T3 temper — T8x tempers have <6 % elongation and strong anisotropy; allow generous bend radii and expect springback.

What surface finishes work on 2090?

Chromic/sulfuric anodize or chromate-free conversion coat plus primer for corrosion protection; clad or paint bare surfaces and isolate from steel/carbon-fibre joints.

What is 2090-T86 used for?

2090-T86 is typically used for aerospace sheet and plate structure, extruded structural stringers, fuselage and wing stiffeners, riveted airframe panels, weight-critical secondary structure and cryogenic tank structure components. In short: first-generation Al-Li; high modulus, low density; very limited formability.

What is the yield strength of 2090-T86?

2090-T86 has a typical yield strength of 540 MPa (78.3 ksi) and a tensile strength of 565 MPa (81.9 ksi) — stronger than 97% of aluminum grades. Strength varies by condition: see the 8 listed tempers.

Is 2090-T86 easy to machine?

Reasonably — machinability is rated good (63/100, better than 58% of aluminum grades). Machines much like 2024-T3 with sharp carbide tooling, high speed and flood coolant; Li-bearing fines are reactive, so avoid dry grinding and collect swarf wet.

Can 2090-T86 be welded?

Not readily — weldability is rated poor (25/100). Fusion welding is not recommended (Li oxide films, hydrogen porosity, hot cracking); joints are riveted, bonded or friction-stir welded.

What surface finishes work on 2090-T86?

Chromic/sulfuric anodize or chromate-free conversion coat plus primer for corrosion protection; clad or paint bare surfaces and isolate from steel/carbon-fibre joints.

Can 2090-T86 be formed, bent or molded?

Form in O or T3 temper — T8x tempers have <6 % elongation and strong anisotropy; allow generous bend radii and expect springback.

What is the maximum service temperature of 2090-T86?

2090-T86 is rated for continuous use to about 150°C (302 °F). Strength falls off well before that limit — check the elevated-temperature data for load-bearing parts.

What is the difference between 2090-T83 and 2090-O?

T83 is the default condition — the workhorse 2090 sheet temper: peak-strength, low-density skin material. O: softest condition, supplied for deep forming or re-heat-treatment; no structural strength. Yield strength is 517 MPa in T83 versus 110 MPa in O.
