What is C82100?
C82100 is a cobalt-modified cast beryllium copper covered by ASTM B824, in which the cobalt addition refines the as-cast grain structure and the beryllium-rich phase provides age hardening. In the aged condition it develops 515 MPa yield, 655 MPa tensile, 6% elongation and 200 HB (20 HRC, 96 HRB) while retaining 208 W/m·K thermal conductivity and 45% IACS, which suits cast mould bases, bushings and non-sparking tooling. Service is limited to about 200 °C, and machining, grinding or welding releases beryllium-bearing dust and fume that must be captured. Where higher hardness is needed in a casting, C82510 is the usual step up. C82100 has a density of 8.75 g/cm³ (0.316 lb/in³), lighter than 51% of copper alloy grades. It melts at 1,030°C (1,886 °F). C82100 has a yield strength of 515 MPa (74.7 ksi) and a tensile strength of 655 MPa (95 ksi) — stronger than 91% of copper alloy grades. Elongation at break is 6% and the elastic modulus is 131 GPa (19 Msi).

Working with C82100
Is C82100 easy to machine?
Machine in TB00 where possible; in TF00 use sharp carbide tooling, rigid setups, flood coolant and HEPA-filtered wet collection to control beryllium-bearing dust.
Can C82100 be welded?
GTAW/EBW/resistance welding are feasible with matching BeCu filler; re-solution treat and age after welding, and provide local fume extraction for Be.
Can C82100 be formed, bent or molded?
Sand, permanent-mould, investment and centrifugal casting all work well; feed heavily with risers and chills because of the wide freezing range and high thermal conductivity.
