What is C82700?

C82700 is a cast beryllium copper with a nickel addition for added strength, hardness and thermal stability, supplied as M, TB00, TF00 and TF00-CAST. Aged material reaches 1000 MPa yield, 1105 MPa tensile and 370 HB (40 HRC), the top of the cast high-copper range, and is used for mould and bearing bodies working to about 220 °C. The trade-offs are 1.5 % elongation, essentially no formability after aging, 105 W/m·K and 21 % IACS conductivity, machinability of 40 and beryllium handling requirements. C82400 is the nearest alternative where slightly lower hardness is acceptable. C82700 has a density of 8.26 g/cm³ (0.298 lb/in³), lighter than 83% of copper alloy grades. Working with C82700

Is C82700 easy to machine?

Machine in TB00 where possible; in TF00 use rigid setups, carbide/PCD tools, moderate speeds and flood coolant — beryllium dust and mist must be captured by local exhaust and wet methods.

Can C82700 be welded?

GTAW/EBW with matched Be-Cu filler is feasible on solution-annealed parts; always re-solution and re-age afterwards, and fume-extract because of BeO.

Can C82700 be formed, bent or molded?

Supplied as sand, investment or permanent-mould castings; the aged alloy is essentially non-formable, so shape must be achieved in casting plus machining.

What surface finishes work on C82700?

Polishes to a mirror mould finish; electroless nickel or hard chrome plating is common for wear/gas resistance — no anodising, and avoid ammonia-bearing cleaners.

What is the yield strength of C82700?

C82700 has a typical yield strength of 1,000 MPa (145 ksi) and a tensile strength of 1,105 MPa (160 ksi) — stronger than 99% of copper alloy grades. Strength varies by condition: see the 4 listed tempers.

Is C82700 easy to machine?

Not especially — machinability is rated fair (40/100, better than 57% of copper alloy grades). Machine in TB00 where possible; in TF00 use rigid setups, carbide/PCD tools, moderate speeds and flood coolant — beryllium dust and mist must be captured by local exhaust and wet methods.

Can C82700 be welded?

With care — weldability is rated fair (35/100). GTAW/EBW with matched Be-Cu filler is feasible on solution-annealed parts; always re-solution and re-age afterwards, and fume-extract because of BeO.

What surface finishes work on C82700?

Polishes to a mirror mould finish; electroless nickel or hard chrome plating is common for wear/gas resistance — no anodising, and avoid ammonia-bearing cleaners.

Can C82700 be formed, bent or molded?

Supplied as sand, investment or permanent-mould castings; the aged alloy is essentially non-formable, so shape must be achieved in casting plus machining.

What is the maximum service temperature of C82700?

C82700 is rated for continuous use to about 220°C (428 °F). Strength falls off well before that limit — check the elevated-temperature data for load-bearing parts.
