What is C82400?

C82400 (Alloy 165C) is a cast beryllium copper with intermediate beryllium content that responds strongly to solution treatment and aging, available as C, M, TB00 and TF00. Aged castings reach 895 MPa yield, 1035 MPa tensile and 340 HB (38 HRC), which is why it is specified for mould cores, bearings and wear parts loaded to about 230 °C. Elongation is only 1.5 % and formability is minimal, thermal conductivity drops to 105 W/m·K at 22 % IACS, and beryllium dust and fume require exposure controls. C82000 is the lower-strength, higher-conductivity option; C82700 is the higher-hardness one. C82400 has a density of 8.3 g/cm³ (0.3 lb/in³), lighter than 80% of copper alloy grades. It melts at 866°C (1,591 °F). C82400 has a yield strength of 895 MPa (130 ksi) and a tensile strength of 1,035 MPa (150 ksi) — stronger than 98% of copper alloy grades. Elongation at break is 1.5% and the elastic modulus is 128 GPa (18.6 Msi).

Working with C82400

Is C82400 easy to machine?

Machine with sharp carbide tooling, positive rake, rigid setups and flood coolant; capture all dust/chips under local exhaust because beryllium-containing particulate is a health hazard — rough soft (C/TB00) and finish after aging where accuracy allows.

Can C82400 be welded?

GTAW/PAW with matching Be-Cu filler works with preheat control and inert shielding, but the heat-affected zone loses aged strength, so re-solution-treat and re-age or accept local softening; fume extraction is mandatory.

Can C82400 be formed, bent or molded?

A casting alloy — pour in sand, permanent mold or centrifugal molds with good gating/feeding for the hot-short mushy range; not intended for cold forming after aging.

C82400 — frequently asked

What is C82400 used for?

C82400 is typically used for plastic injection molds, bearings, cams and wear parts. In short: high-hardness cast Be-Cu; mould-grade wear resistance; strength over conductivity.

What is the yield strength of C82400?

C82400 has a typical yield strength of 895 MPa (130 ksi) and a tensile strength of 1,035 MPa (150 ksi) — stronger than 98% of copper alloy grades. Strength varies by condition: see the 4 listed tempers.

Is C82400 easy to machine?

Not especially — machinability is rated fair (40/100, better than 57% of copper alloy grades). Machine with sharp carbide tooling, positive rake, rigid setups and flood coolant; capture all dust/chips under local exhaust because beryllium-containing particulate is a health hazard — rough soft (C/TB00) and finish after aging where accuracy allows.

Can C82400 be welded?

With care — weldability is rated fair (45/100). GTAW/PAW with matching Be-Cu filler works with preheat control and inert shielding, but the heat-affected zone loses aged strength, so re-solution-treat and re-age or accept local softening; fume extraction is mandatory.

What surface finishes work on C82400?

Can C82400 be formed, bent or molded?

A casting alloy — pour in sand, permanent mold or centrifugal molds with good gating/feeding for the hot-short mushy range; not intended for cold forming after aging.

What is the maximum service temperature of C82400?

C82400 is rated for continuous use to about 230°C (446 °F). Strength falls off well before that limit — check the elevated-temperature data for load-bearing parts.

What is the difference between C82400-TF00 and C82400-M?

TF00 is the default condition — standard supply condition for mold inserts, cooling cores and heavy-duty bearings needing 35–41 HRC with ~20% IACS conductivity. M: as-cast 1.65 %Be–Co beryllium copper casting: moderate strength and good ductility before solution/age hardening, excellent castability and high thermal conductivity for moulds and bearings. Yield strength is 895 MPa in TF00 versus 240 MPa in M.
