What is 3105?

3105 is a lightly alloyed Al–Mn–Mg sheet alloy (Mn 0.3–0.8 %, Mg 0.2–0.8 %) that is slightly stronger than 3003 while keeping excellent formability, corrosion resistance and coil-coating behaviour. It is supplied almost exclusively as thin sheet/coil in H-tempers for building products — siding, roofing, gutters, downspouts, mobile-home and trim stock, bottle caps and stamped hardware. It is not heat-treatable, strength is modest (max ~215 MPa), it is not a structural or high-temperature alloy, and clear anodizing gives a dull grey rather than a bright finish. 3105 has a density of 2.72 g/cm³ (0.0983 lb/in³), heavier than 57% of aluminum grades. It melts at 635°C (1,175 °F). 3105 has a yield strength of 160 MPa (23.2 ksi) and a tensile strength of 180 MPa (26.1 ksi) — weaker than 61% of aluminum grades. Elongation at break is 8% and the elastic modulus is 69 GPa (10 Msi).

Working with 3105

Is 3105 easy to machine?

Soft and gummy — use polished high-rake carbide, high surface speed and flood lubrication to avoid built-up edge; blanking and shearing are preferred over milling for thin coil.

Can 3105 be welded?

Readily GTAW/GMAW/resistance welded with 4043 or 5356 filler (5356 for better colour match after anodizing); HAZ reverts toward O strength, so joints lose H-temper properties.

Can 3105 be formed, bent or molded?

Excellent roll forming, bending and stamping in O/H2x tempers; H14–H18 need generous bend radii and grain-direction control to avoid edge cracking.
