What is Extem XH1015?

Extem XH1015 is SABIC's ultra-high-heat polyetherimide-based copolymer, an amorphous thermoplastic polyimide with a glass transition near 260 °C, 115 MPa tensile strength, 30% elongation and 1.31 g/cm³ density. Engineers select it where standard PEI does not meet thermal requirements, such as reflow soldering fixtures and aerospace ducting, and it is listed unfilled and with 30% glass fibre, 30% carbon fibre or 15% PTFE, plus film and machining stock. Processing is demanding: 380–420 °C melt with 175–230 °C tools and hot runners rated for the temperature. Standard PEI (Ultem) is the fallback where the 260 °C Tg is not required. Extem XH1015 has a density of 1.31 g/cm³ (0.0473 lb/in³), heavier than 71% of polymer grades. Its glass-transition temperature is 267°C (513 °F). Extem XH1015 has a yield strength of 115 MPa (16.7 ksi) and a tensile strength of 115 MPa (16.7 ksi) — stronger than 99% of polymer grades. Elongation at break is 30% and the elastic modulus is 3.6 GPa (0.522 Msi).

What is Extem XH1015 used for?

Working with Extem XH1015

Is Extem XH1015 easy to machine?

Machines like a hard amorphous resin — sharp positive-rake carbide, high speed and light feed with air or mist cooling; avoid sharp internal corners and use annealing (≈240 °C, slow cool) after heavy cuts to relieve stress-cracking risk.

Can Extem XH1015 be welded?

Joined by ultrasonic, vibration and laser welding or by adhesive bonding after plasma/abrasion prep; hot-plate welding is difficult because of the very high softening temperature.

Can Extem XH1015 be formed, bent or molded?

Injection mold at 380–420 °C melt with 175–230 °C tool, hot runners rated for the temperature, drying 4–6 h at 150–160 °C to <0.02 % moisture; thermoforming of sheet requires >280 °C surface temperature.

What surface finishes work on Extem XH1015?

Takes paint, vacuum metallization and pad printing well after cleaning; the natural amber transparency polishes to optical quality but the resin yellows under sustained UV unless coated.

How much does Extem XH1015 cost?

Extem XH1015 is a high-cost polymer ($$$$), pricier than about 78% of the materials FabDigit quotes. Part price depends far more on geometry, tolerance and quantity than on the raw stock — upload a CAD file for a live quote.

Extem XH1015 — frequently asked

What is Extem XH1015 used for?

Extem XH1015 is typically used for surface-mount reflow carriers, aerospace ducting and high-temperature electrical bobbins. In short: highest-heat PEI copolymer; tg near 260 °C; survives reflow soldering.

What is the yield strength of Extem XH1015?

Extem XH1015 has a typical yield strength of 115 MPa (16.7 ksi) and a tensile strength of 115 MPa (16.7 ksi) — stronger than 99% of polymer grades. Strength varies by condition: see the 4 listed tempers.

Is Extem XH1015 easy to machine?

Reasonably — machinability is rated good (55/100, worse than 64% of polymer grades).

With care — weldability is rated fair (35/100). Joined by ultrasonic, vibration and laser welding or by adhesive bonding after plasma/abrasion prep; hot-plate welding is difficult because of the very high softening temperature.

What surface finishes work on Extem XH1015?
