What is Ultem 2300?
Ultem 2300 is the 30 % glass-fiber reinforced grade of SABIC polyetherimide, trading the ductility of Ultem 1000 for stiffness and dimensional stability: 1.51 g/cm3 density, 169 MPa tensile strength, 3 % elongation, 9 GPa modulus, 0.3 W/m-K thermal conductivity and 170 C maximum service temperature. It is specified for structural aerospace and electronics parts that must hold tolerance hot, and is available in GF10 through GF40, stainless-filled GF30 and black UV variants. The 3 % elongation makes it notch sensitive, machinability drops to 55 because the glass is abrasive, and molded shrinkage is anisotropic. Choose unfilled Ultem 1000 where impact resistance, transparency or a cosmetic surface matter more. Ultem 2300 has a density of 1.51 g/cm³ (0.0546 lb/in³), heavier than 88% of polymer grades. Its glass-transition temperature is 217°C (423 °F). Ultem 2300 has a yield strength of 169 MPa (24.5 ksi) and a tensile strength of 169 MPa (24.5 ksi) — stronger than 99% of polymer grades. Elongation at break is 3% and the elastic modulus is 9 GPa (1.31 Msi).

Working with Ultem 2300
Is Ultem 2300 easy to machine?
Machines cleanly but the glass is abrasive — use sharp carbide or PCD tooling, high speed / moderate feed, air or mist cooling, and avoid deep sharp corners because the material is notch-sensitive.
Can Ultem 2300 be welded?
Ultrasonic, vibration and hot-plate welding all work at PEI temperatures, but 30% GF cuts joint strength to roughly half of the base resin; adhesive bonding with epoxy after plasma/abrasion is common.
Can Ultem 2300 be formed, bent or molded?
Dry to <0.02% moisture (150 °C, 4–6 h), mold at 350–400 °C melt and 135–175 °C tool, use generous gates and 700–1400 bar hold pressure; expect anisotropic shrinkage (0.2–0.5% flow vs 0.5–0.8% cross-flow).
Ultem 2300 chemical composition (wt %)
Limits by weight percent from the governing specification, written the way the spec states them — a single maximum for impurities, a range for alloying elements, and the base element as balance. Nominal is the typical mid-range value.

What surface finishes work on Ultem 2300?
Takes vapor-honed, bead-blast or textured tool finishes; paintable and metallizable after primer, but fiber read-through limits high-gloss appearance and no annealing above 200 °C is needed for most parts (stress relief 180 °C/2 h if machined).
How much does Ultem 2300 cost?
Ultem 2300 is a high-cost polymer ($$$$), pricier than about 78% of the materials FabDigit quotes. Part price depends far more on geometry, tolerance and quantity than on the raw stock — upload a CAD file for a live quote.
Ultem 2300 — frequently asked
What is Ultem 2300 used for?
Ultem 2300 is typically used for aircraft ducting brackets, structural electrical housings, high-stiffness connectors and under-hood automotive components. In short: stiffest standard PEI grade; structural aerospace polyetherimide; notch sensitive, abrasive to tools.
What is the yield strength of Ultem 2300?
Ultem 2300 has a typical yield strength of 169 MPa (24.5 ksi) and a tensile strength of 169 MPa (24.5 ksi) — stronger than 99% of polymer grades. Strength varies by condition: see the 6 listed tempers.
Is Ultem 2300 easy to machine?
Reasonably — machinability is rated good (55/100, worse than 64% of polymer grades). Machines cleanly but the glass is abrasive — use sharp carbide or PCD tooling, high speed / moderate feed, air or mist cooling, and avoid deep sharp corners because the material is notch-sensitive.
