What is ERNiCu-7?

ERNiCu-7 is a nickel-copper filler metal (UNS N04060, AWS A5.14 ERNiCu-7), sold as Monel Filler Metal 60, for GTAW and GMAW of Monel 400 and other nickel-copper components. It is chosen for marine and chemical service welds and for Monel-to-steel transition joints, and is supplied as spooled wire and cut rod; as-welded deposits run about 315 MPa yield, 510 MPa tensile, 35 % elongation and 165 HB (84 HRB), with a corrosion score of 78. Service is limited to 480 °C, the deposit cannot be strengthened by heat treatment and it is sulfur-sensitive; for oxidizing acids or higher strength use a Ni-Cr-Mo filler such as ERNiCrMo-4. ERNiCu-7 has a density of 8.8 g/cm³ (0.318 lb/in³), heavier than 81% of nickel alloy grades. It melts at 1,300°C (2,372 °F). ERNiCu-7 has a yield strength of 315 MPa (45.7 ksi) and a tensile strength of 510 MPa (74 ksi) — weaker than 70% of nickel alloy grades. Elongation at break is 35% and the elastic modulus is 179 GPa (26 Msi).

Working with ERNiCu-7

Is ERNiCu-7 easy to machine?

Weld metal machines like Monel 400 — gummy and work-hardening; use sharp positive-rake carbide, heavy feeds, slow speed and flood coolant to avoid glazing.

Can ERNiCu-7 be welded?

Use pure Ar (GTAW) or Ar with small He addition (GMAW), stringer beads, low heat input and interpass below ~150 °C; keep joints free of sulfur, grease and lead to prevent hot cracking, and never dilute heavily with iron-rich base metal.

Can ERNiCu-7 be formed, bent or molded?

Supplied as drawn wire/rod; cold bending of the deposit is possible but the alloy work-hardens fast and cannot be strengthened by heat treatment.
