What is N30C?

N30C is the cast counterpart of the Ni-Mo-Cr Hastelloy N family, ordered to ASTM A494 as UNS N30002 in sand or investment cast form. Solution-annealed castings give 300 MPa yield, 550 MPa tensile and 15% elongation at 195 HB (92 HRB), with service to 760 °C and a corrosion resistance rating of 88 in molten salt and hot reducing chemical environments. Machinability is low (rating 20) and the long freezing range needs generous risering or HIP for pressure-tight parts. For general hot chloride duty a cast Ni-Cr-Mo C-type alloy is the usual alternative. N30C has a density of 8.86 g/cm³ (0.32 lb/in³), heavier than 85% of nickel alloy grades. It melts at 1,300°C (2,372 °F). N30C has a yield strength of 300 MPa (43.5 ksi) and a tensile strength of 550 MPa (79.8 ksi) — weaker than 78% of nickel alloy grades. Elongation at break is 15% and the elastic modulus is 210 GPa (30.5 Msi).

Working with N30C

Is N30C easy to machine?

Gummy, strongly work-hardening: rigid setup, sharp positive-rake carbide, low speed (15–25 m/min), heavy feed, flood coolant, never dwell.

Can N30C be welded?

GTAW/SMAW with matching Ni-Mo-Cr filler, low heat input, interpass <120 °C; solution anneal after major weld repair to restore corrosion resistance.

Can N30C be formed, bent or molded?

Sand or investment cast with generous risering — long freezing range gives shrinkage porosity; HIP for pressure-tight parts; not a cold-formable product.

Not especially — machinability is rated poor (20/100, better than 53% of nickel alloy grades). Gummy, strongly work-hardening: rigid setup, sharp positive-rake carbide, low speed (15–25 m/min), heavy feed, flood coolant, never dwell.

Can N30C be welded?

Yes — weldability is rated good (65/100). GTAW/SMAW with matching Ni-Mo-Cr filler, low heat input, interpass <120 °C; solution anneal after major weld repair to restore corrosion resistance.

What surface finishes work on N30C?

Grit-blast and pickle (HNO3-HF) or full solution anneal to remove casting scale; takes a good mechanical/electropolish; no anodizing (non-valve metal).

Can N30C be formed, bent or molded?

Sand or investment cast with generous risering — long freezing range gives shrinkage porosity; HIP for pressure-tight parts; not a cold-formable product.

What is the maximum service temperature of N30C?

N30C is rated for continuous use to about 760°C (1,400 °F). Strength falls off well before that limit — check the elevated-temperature data for load-bearing parts.

What is the difference between N30C-SA and N30C-F?
