What is M30C?

M30C is a cast nickel-copper alloy of the Monel family (UNS J24130, ASTM A494 M30C), with a niobium addition and composition modified for castability rather than wrought processing. It is used for sand and investment cast seawater pump impellers, valve bodies and marine hardware, delivering 270 MPa yield, 500 MPa tensile, 30 % elongation and about 140 HB in the as-cast condition. Service is limited to 480 °C, the alloy has no chromium so it is not suited to oxidizing acids, and it machines like Monel 400. Where higher strength is required, M30H is the nearest alternative; M35-2 covers general Monel 400-type castings. M30C has a density of 8.8 g/cm³ (0.318 lb/in³), heavier than 81% of nickel alloy grades. It melts at 1,290°C (2,354 °F). M30C has a yield strength of 270 MPa (39.2 ksi) and a tensile strength of 500 MPa (72.5 ksi) — weaker than 84% of nickel alloy grades. Elongation at break is 30% and the elastic modulus is 150 GPa (21.8 Msi).

Working with M30C

Is M30C easy to machine?

Machine like Monel 400: rigid setup, positive-rake carbide, low speed (20–35 m/min) with heavy constant feed and flood coolant to avoid work-hardened glazing.

Can M30C be welded?

Readily GTAW/SMAW repaired with ERNiCu-7/ENiCu-7 filler; keep interpass below ~150 °C, clean thoroughly, and avoid sulfur contamination to prevent hot cracking.

Can M30C be formed, bent or molded?

Sand or investment cast only; needs generous risering and chills because of long freezing range — Nb reduces hot tearing versus M35-1.

What surface finishes work on M30C?

Not anodizable; pickle/passivate after welding, then mechanically polish or apply electroless nickel where extra erosion resistance is needed.

M30C — frequently asked

What is M30C used for?

M30C is typically used for seawater pump impellers, valve bodies and marine hardware castings. In short: nb-modified for better castability; seawater-grade Ni-Cu casting; lower hot-tearing than M35-1.

What is the yield strength of M30C?

M30C has a typical yield strength of 270 MPa (39.2 ksi) and a tensile strength of 500 MPa (72.5 ksi) — weaker than 84% of nickel alloy grades. Strength varies by condition: see the 4 listed tempers.

Is M30C easy to machine?

Not especially — machinability is rated fair (35/100, better than 97% of nickel alloy grades). Machine like Monel 400: rigid setup, positive-rake carbide, low speed (20–35 m/min) with heavy constant feed and flood coolant to avoid work-hardened glazing.

Can M30C be welded?

Yes — weldability is rated good (68/100). Readily GTAW/SMAW repaired with ERNiCu-7/ENiCu-7 filler; keep interpass below ~150 °C, clean thoroughly, and avoid sulfur contamination to prevent hot cracking.

What surface finishes work on M30C?

Can M30C be formed, bent or molded?

Sand or investment cast only; needs generous risering and chills because of long freezing range — Nb reduces hot tearing versus M35-1.

What is the maximum service temperature of M30C?

M30C is rated for continuous use to about 480°C (896 °F). Strength falls off well before that limit — check the elevated-temperature data for load-bearing parts.

What is the difference between M30C-F and M30C-HOM?
