Working with 4820 Q&T
Is 4820 easy to machine?
Machine in the annealed or normalized state with rigid setups and sharp carbide; the tough Ni-Mo matrix is gummy — use positive rake, generous feed and flood coolant, and finish-grind after carburizing.
Can 4820 be welded?
Weldable only with care: preheat 200–300 °C, low-hydrogen Ni-bearing filler, and post-weld temper/stress relief; avoid welding carburized surfaces entirely.
Can 4820 be formed, bent or molded?
Cold form only in the annealed condition and expect springback; hot forge 1100–1200 °C, finish above 950 °C, then normalize and anneal before machining.
What surface finishes work on 4820?
No native corrosion protection — phosphate + oil, black oxide, zinc/manganese phosphate or nickel plating; case-hardened surfaces polish and hone well but must not be electroplated without hydrogen bake-out.
