Working with 4621-N

Is 4621 easy to machine?

Machines well in the annealed or cold-drawn state (~65 % of 1212); use sharp carbide or HSS, generous coolant, and finish-machine before carburizing since the case is grind-only.

Can 4621 be welded?

Weldable in the uncarburized state with low-hydrogen consumables, 150–250 °C preheat and post-weld stress relief; do not weld carburized surfaces.

Can 4621 be formed, bent or molded?

Good cold heading and bending in the annealed condition; hot forge 1100–1230 °C and normalize afterwards to restore grain size.

What surface finishes work on 4621?

Case-hardened parts are ground and shot-peened for fatigue strength; bare surfaces rust quickly, so oil, black-oxide, phosphate or zinc/nickel plating (with hydrogen bake) is standard.

4621-N — frequently asked

What is 4621-N used for?

4621-N is typically used for gears, pins and carburized shafts. In short: higher-carbon 4620 variant; ni-Mo carburizing gear steel; tough core after case hardening.

What is the yield strength of 4621-N?

4621-N has a typical yield strength of 385 MPa (55.8 ksi) and a tensile strength of 595 MPa (86.3 ksi) — weaker than 65% of steel grades. Strength varies by condition: see the 7 listed tempers.

Is 4621-N easy to machine?

Reasonably — machinability is rated good (55/100, better than 62% of steel grades). Machines well in the annealed or cold-drawn state (~65 % of 1212); use sharp carbide or HSS, generous coolant, and finish-machine before carburizing since the case is grind-only.

Can 4621-N be welded?

With care — weldability is rated fair (45/100). Weldable in the uncarburized state with low-hydrogen consumables, 150–250 °C preheat and post-weld stress relief; do not weld carburized surfaces.

What surface finishes work on 4621-N?

Case-hardened parts are ground and shot-peened for fatigue strength; bare surfaces rust quickly, so oil, black-oxide, phosphate or zinc/nickel plating (with hydrogen bake) is standard.

Can 4621-N be formed, bent or molded?

Good cold heading and bending in the annealed condition; hot forge 1100–1230 °C and normalize afterwards to restore grain size.

What is the maximum service temperature of 4621-N?

4621-N is rated for continuous use to about 400°C (752 °F). Strength falls off well before that limit — check the elevated-temperature data for load-bearing parts.

What is the difference between 4621-ANN and 4621 QT28-32?

ANN is the default condition — softest condition; the usual stock form for bar that will be machined then carburized. QT28-32: direct-quench-and-temper option for small sections needing uniform medium-strength core without carburizing. Yield strength is 380 MPa in ANN versus 790 MPa in QT28-32.
