What is N08026?

N08026 is a higher-molybdenum development of the Alloy 20 superaustenitic family, ordered to ASTM B366/B462/B463 as annealed plate, hot-finished and cold-drawn bar, cold-worked tube, annealed forgings and as-welded product. The extra molybdenum improves resistance to hot sulfuric acid and to pitting and crevice attack (corrosion rating 80), so it is specified for chemical process piping, pumps and flue-gas desulfurization hardware. Default properties are 310 MPa yield, 620 MPa tensile, 45 % elongation and 170 HB (88 HRB), with service to 500 °C. It work-hardens like a nickel alloy, needs overalloyed Ni-Cr-Mo filler, and costs well above 316L; use N08020 or N08024 where the acid duty is milder. N08026 has a density of 8.02 g/cm³ (0.29 lb/in³), heavier than 97% of stainless steel grades. It melts at 1,345°C (2,453 °F). N08026 has a yield strength of 310 MPa (45 ksi) and a tensile strength of 620 MPa (89.9 ksi) — weaker than 63% of stainless steel grades. Elongation at break is 45% and the elastic modulus is 193 GPa (28 Msi).

Working with N08026

Is N08026 easy to machine?

Treat as a nickel alloy: rigid setups, positive-rake sharp carbide, 20–35 m/min surface speed, heavy constant feed and flood coolant to avoid work-hardened glazing.

Can N08026 be welded?

Weld with GTAW/GMAW/SMAW using overalloyed Ni-Cr-Mo filler (ERNiCrMo-3/-4); keep interpass below ~150 °C and heat input low, no preheat, no PWHT required.

Can N08026 be formed, bent or molded?

Cold forms well but work-hardens rapidly — allow 40–60% more press force than 304 and interstage anneal at 1120–1180 °C with rapid quench; hot work 1100–1200 °C then solution anneal.

N08026 — frequently asked

What is N08026 used for?

N08026 is typically used for hot sulfuric acid service, chemical process piping and pumps, flue gas desulfurization components and phosphoric acid production equipment. In short: highest-Mo Alloy 20 type; hot sulfuric acid grade; work-hardens like nickel alloy.

What is the yield strength of N08026?

N08026 has a typical yield strength of 310 MPa (45 ksi) and a tensile strength of 620 MPa (89.9 ksi) — weaker than 63% of stainless steel grades. Strength varies by condition: see the 4 listed tempers.

Is N08026 easy to machine?

Not especially — machinability is rated poor (28/100, worse than 79% of stainless steel grades). Treat as a nickel alloy: rigid setups, positive-rake sharp carbide, 20–35 m/min surface speed, heavy constant feed and flood coolant to avoid work-hardened glazing.

Can N08026 be welded?

Yes — weldability is rated very good (78/100). Weld with GTAW/GMAW/SMAW using overalloyed Ni-Cr-Mo filler (ERNiCrMo-3/-4); keep interpass below ~150 °C and heat input low, no preheat, no PWHT required.
