What is N08700?
N08700 (JS700) is a low-carbon, niobium-stabilized superaustenitic stainless — an improved Alloy 20 with about 2.5% molybdenum and higher nickel — covered by ASTM A240 and B599. It is used for sulfuric and phosphoric acid service where weld sensitization must be avoided, in plate, sheet, pipe, bar and wire, including cold-drawn and spring tempers; annealed material gives 275 MPa yield, 585 MPa tensile and 45% elongation. Service is limited to about 500 °C and the alloy work-hardens quickly in both machining and forming. Alloy 20 (N08020) is the lower-cost alternative. N08700 has a density of 8 g/cm³ (0.289 lb/in³), heavier than 92% of stainless steel grades. It melts at 1,370°C (2,498 °F). N08700 has a yield strength of 275 MPa (39.9 ksi) and a tensile strength of 585 MPa (84.8 ksi) — weaker than 77% of stainless steel grades. Elongation at break is 45% and the elastic modulus is 195 GPa (28.3 Msi).

Working with N08700
Is N08700 easy to machine?
Cut like a nickel alloy: rigid setup, positive-rake sharp carbide, low speed with heavy feed and flood coolant to avoid rubbing and work-hardened skin.
Can N08700 be welded?
Readily welded by GTAW/GMAW/SMAW with Nb-stabilized matching or Ni-base (e.g. NiCrMo) filler, low heat input, no preheat, interpass below ~150 °C; post-weld anneal usually unnecessary.
Can N08700 be formed, bent or molded?
Cold forms well but work-hardens fast — allow extra power, generous radii and interstage annealing at 1010–1120 °C with rapid cooling; hot work 1150–900 °C then quench.
