What is 1.4539?

1.4539 (X1NiCrMoCu25-20-5, N08904, 904L) is a low-carbon, high-nickel austenitic stainless steel with molybdenum and copper, the reference superaustenitic grade for sulfuric and phosphoric acid duty and chloride stress-corrosion cracking resistance. It is broadly stocked as 2B, 2D and BA sheet, 1D plate, cold-drawn bar, wire, tube and forgings, with annealed values near 260 MPa yield, 600 MPa tensile, 45 % elongation and 165 HB and service to 400 °C. Formability is good (78), but the alloy work hardens strongly and machines slowly; where hot-chloride pitting is more severe, step up to Alloy 31 (1.4563) or 654 SMO (1.4652). 1.4539 has a density of 7.95 g/cm³ (0.287 lb/in³), heavier than 81% of stainless steel grades. Working with 1.4539

Is 1.4539 easy to machine?

Machine like a high-Ni superaustenitic: rigid setup, sharp positive-rake carbide, heavy positive feed to cut under the work-hardened skin, ~30 % of 1212 speeds, flood emulsion or high-pressure coolant.

Can 1.4539 be welded?

Excellent weldability by GTAW/GMAW/SMAW with low heat input (<1.5 kJ/mm) and interpass <150 °C; use overalloyed filler (ERNiCrMo-3, ERNiCrMo-13 or 27-31-4-Cu) to offset Mo segregation; no preheat or PWHT required.

Can 1.4539 be formed, bent or molded?

Very ductile but strongly work hardening — allow 1.5–2× the press force used for carbon steel, generous bend radii, intermediate solution anneals for deep multi-stage draws; hot work 1150–900 °C then re-anneal.

1.4539 has a typical yield strength of 260 MPa (37.7 ksi) and a tensile strength of 600 MPa (87 ksi) — weaker than 84% of stainless steel grades. Strength varies by condition: see the 6 listed tempers.

Is 1.4539 easy to machine?

Not especially — machinability is rated poor (28/100, worse than 79% of stainless steel grades). Machine like a high-Ni superaustenitic: rigid setup, sharp positive-rake carbide, heavy positive feed to cut under the work-hardened skin, ~30 % of 1212 speeds, flood emulsion or high-pressure coolant.
