What is IN-100?

IN-100 (UNS N13100, AMS 5397) is a γ′-strengthened nickel superalloy for vacuum investment casting, with about 10 wt % combined Al+Ti providing high-temperature strength and creep resistance. Heat-treated castings reach 855 MPa yield, 1020 MPa tensile, 9 % elongation and 375 HB (40 HRC), with service to 980 °C; it is supplied as equiaxed castings, HIP plus heat-treated castings and a powder-metallurgy variant for disks. The high γ′ content makes it effectively non-weldable and very hard to machine, with machinability about 8 % of AISI 1212, so features are ground, EDMed or ECMed. MAR-M247 and Rene 80 are the nearest cast alternatives. IN-100 has a density of 7.75 g/cm³ (0.28 lb/in³), lighter than 97% of nickel alloy grades. It melts at 1,265°C (2,309 °F). Working with IN-100

Is IN-100 easy to machine?

Very difficult (≈8% of AISI 1212): use rigid setups, low speeds with ceramic/SiAlON or coated carbide, heavy flood coolant; grinding, EDM and ECM are the normal finishing routes for blade features.

Can IN-100 be welded?

Effectively non-weldable by fusion — 10 wt% Al+Ti causes strain-age and liquation cracking; repairs use pre-heated/controlled EB or laser cladding with ductile filler, or wide-gap brazing plus post-braze heat treatment.

Can IN-100 be formed, bent or molded?

Supplied as vacuum investment castings (equiaxed, optionally HIPed); the PM variant is consolidated by HIP/extrusion and isothermally forged in the superplastic regime — no cold forming.

IN-100 is typically used for gas turbine blades, turbine disks and aircraft engine hot-section parts. In short: high-strength cast superalloy; non-weldable turbine alloy; 980 °C service capability.

What is the yield strength of IN-100?

IN-100 has a typical yield strength of 855 MPa (124 ksi) and a tensile strength of 1,020 MPa (148 ksi) — stronger than 90% of nickel alloy grades. Strength varies by condition: see the 4 listed tempers.

Is IN-100 easy to machine?

Not especially — machinability is rated not recommended (10/100, worse than 93% of nickel alloy grades). Very difficult (≈8% of AISI 1212): use rigid setups, low speeds with ceramic/SiAlON or coated carbide, heavy flood coolant; grinding, EDM and ECM are the normal finishing routes for blade features.

Can IN-100 be welded?

Not readily — weldability is rated not recommended (5/100). Effectively non-weldable by fusion — 10 wt% Al+Ti causes strain-age and liquation cracking; repairs use pre-heated/controlled EB or laser cladding with ductile filler, or wide-gap brazing plus post-braze heat treatment.

What is the maximum service temperature of IN-100?

IN-100 is rated for continuous use to about 980°C (1,796 °F). Strength falls off well before that limit — check the elevated-temperature data for load-bearing parts.

What is the difference between IN-100-HT and IN-100-PM?

HT is the default condition — standard fully heat-treated condition supplied for turbine blades and vanes — best balance of tensile, creep-rupture and structural stability. PM: wrought PM ('Gatorized') form for turbine disks — much higher yield strength and ductility than the cast alloy at sub-760 °C disk temperatures. Yield strength is 855 MPa in HT versus 1,050 MPa in PM.
