What is BAlSi-3?

BAlSi-3 is an Al-Si-Cu brazing filler to AWS A5.8 (B Al 4145) whose copper addition lowers the melting point relative to plain Al-Si fillers, with liquidus above about 585 °C. It is supplied as drawn rod, flux-coated rod, powder, preforms and clad layers for torch and induction brazing of heat-treatable aluminum assemblies, giving roughly 205 MPa tensile, 110 MPa yield, 3 % elongation, 70 HB and 130 W/m·K. Ductility and corrosion resistance are low because of the Cu-rich fillet, and the deposit is hot-crack prone if fusion welded; BAlSi-2 is the choice for corrosion-critical heat exchangers. BAlSi-3 has a density of 2.75 g/cm³ (0.0994 lb/in³), heavier than 67% of aluminum grades. It melts at 521°C (970 °F). BAlSi-3 has a yield strength of 110 MPa (16 ksi) and a tensile strength of 205 MPa (29.7 ksi) — weaker than 81% of aluminum grades. Elongation at break is 3% and the elastic modulus is 71 GPa (10.3 Msi).

What is BAlSi-3 used for?

  • torch brazing
  • induction brazing
  • heat-treatable aluminum assemblies

Working with BAlSi-3

Is BAlSi-3 easy to machine?

Rarely machined; solidified fillets contain abrasive primary Si and are best trimmed with carbide/PCD tooling at high speed and low feed.

Can BAlSi-3 be welded?

Not a fusion-welding filler — use for brazing only above ~585 °C liquidus; fusion welding of the deposit is hot-crack prone due to Cu.

Can BAlSi-3 be formed, bent or molded?

Supplied as drawn rod, powder, preform or clad layer; low ductility limits cold bending of the bare rod, and brazing sheet must be formed before the braze cycle.

What surface finishes work on BAlSi-3?

Do not anodize decoratively (dark, blotchy films); remove chloride flux residue with hot-water/nitric rinse, then chromate-convert or paint to protect the Cu-rich fillet.
