What is 4147?
4147 is a high-silicon, copper-modified Al-Si brazing filler (EN AW-4147, AlSi11Cu3) supplied as wire, rod, foil and cladding in O, F, H14 and as-brazed condition. The Cu addition widens the melting range, which suits furnace and torch brazing of aluminum assemblies where joint gaps vary. Reference values are 130 MPa tensile, 60 MPa yield, 15% elongation, 45 HB, 155 W/m·K, 40% IACS and a 150 °C service limit, with low formability (35) and abrasive machining behaviour (32). For flux-free controlled-atmosphere brazing, use 4104 instead. 4147 has a density of 2.67 g/cm³ (0.0965 lb/in³), lighter than 78% of aluminum grades. It melts at 560°C (1,040 °F). 4147 has a yield strength of 60 MPa (8.7 ksi) and a tensile strength of 130 MPa (18.9 ksi) — weaker than 93% of aluminum grades. Elongation at break is 15% and the elastic modulus is 71 GPa (10.3 Msi).

Working with 4147
Is 4147 easy to machine?
Machinable but abrasive — use PCD or polished carbide, high speed, low feed and flood coolant; primary silicon dulls HSS quickly and gives a matte finish.
Can 4147 be welded?
Intended as a filler, not a base metal: it flows freely and resists hot cracking in Al-Si and Al-Mg-Si joints, but a resolidified bead is brittle and should not be bent or post-formed.
Can 4147 be formed, bent or molded?
Very limited cold formability; keep to wire drawing, foil rolling and cladding on brazing sheet, with interstage anneals, and avoid tight bends or deep forming.

What surface finishes work on 4147?
Chemical conversion coating, chromate-free pretreatment or paint over brazed seams; anodizing turns high-Si filler dark grey and blotchy, and Mg-bearing joints must be cleaned of flux/oxide residue before finishing.

4147 — frequently asked
What is 4147 used for?
4147 is typically used for furnace brazing, torch brazing and aluminum assembly joining. In short: wide melting range filler; free-flowing braze alloy; brittle after resolidification.
What is the yield strength of 4147?
4147 has a typical yield strength of 60 MPa (8.7 ksi) and a tensile strength of 130 MPa (18.9 ksi) — weaker than 93% of aluminum grades. Strength varies by condition: see the 4 listed tempers.
Is 4147 easy to machine?
Not especially — machinability is rated poor (32/100, worse than 89% of aluminum grades). Machinable but abrasive — use PCD or polished carbide, high speed, low feed and flood coolant; primary silicon dulls HSS quickly and gives a matte finish.
Can 4147 be welded?
With care — weldability is rated fair (50/100). Intended as a filler, not a base metal: it flows freely and resists hot cracking in Al-Si and Al-Mg-Si joints, but a resolidified bead is brittle and should not be bent or post-formed.
What surface finishes work on 4147?
Chemical conversion coating, chromate-free pretreatment or paint over brazed seams; anodizing turns high-Si filler dark grey and blotchy, and Mg-bearing joints must be cleaned of flux/oxide residue before finishing.
Can 4147 be formed, bent or molded?
Very limited cold formability; keep to wire drawing, foil rolling and cladding on brazing sheet, with interstage anneals, and avoid tight bends or deep forming.
What is the maximum service temperature of 4147?
4147 is rated for continuous use to about 150°C (302 °F). Strength falls off well before that limit — check the elevated-temperature data for load-bearing parts.
What is the difference between 4147-O and 4147-H14?
O is the default condition — standard soft-drawn/annealed condition for brazing wire, preforms, foil and brazing-sheet cladding; pick it for any brazing consumable. H14: cold-drawn stiffer wire chosen when spooled or hand-fed rod must resist bending during automated brazing; values are indicative only. Yield strength is 60 MPa in O versus 140 MPa in H14.
How much does 4147 cost?
