Working with ERTi-24-AW

Is ERTi-24 easy to machine?

Rarely machined as wire; if the deposit is machined use rigid setups, sharp uncoated-carbide or PVD-coated tools, low surface speed (25–50 m/min) and flood coolant to avoid work hardening and titanium fire risk.

Can ERTi-24 be welded?

GTAW/GMAW/PAW with high-purity argon torch, trailing and back purge (<50 ppm O₂); keep interpass below ~150 °C, clean wire with acetone, and avoid any contamination that raises O/N/H and embrittles the bead.

Can ERTi-24 be formed, bent or molded?

Wire is supplied straightened or spooled; cold bending of the deposit is limited — bend radii ≥4t and prefer warm forming at 200–400 °C for weldment straightening.

What surface finishes work on ERTi-24?

Pickle in HNO₃/HF or use abrasive/stainless brushing to remove alpha case and heat tint before service; Type II anodizing or glass-bead peening are used for appearance and fatigue improvement.

ERTi-24-AW — frequently asked

What is ERTi-24-AW used for?

ERTi-24-AW is typically used for chemical process equipment welding, marine and offshore titanium fabrication and high-strength corrosion-resistant weldments. In short: pd-modified Ti-6Al-4V filler; strength plus acid resistance; matches Grade 24 base metal.

What is the yield strength of ERTi-24-AW?

ERTi-24-AW has a typical yield strength of 860 MPa (125 ksi) and a tensile strength of 930 MPa (135 ksi) — stronger than 71% of titanium grades. Strength varies by condition: see the 4 listed tempers.

Is ERTi-24-AW easy to machine?

Not especially — machinability is rated poor (20/100, worse than 68% of titanium grades). Rarely machined as wire; if the deposit is machined use rigid setups, sharp uncoated-carbide or PVD-coated tools, low surface speed (25–50 m/min) and flood coolant to avoid work hardening and titanium fire risk.

Can ERTi-24-AW be welded?

Yes — weldability is rated very good (80/100). GTAW/GMAW/PAW with high-purity argon torch, trailing and back purge (<50 ppm O₂); keep interpass below ~150 °C, clean wire with acetone, and avoid any contamination that raises O/N/H and embrittles the bead.

What surface finishes work on ERTi-24-AW?

Pickle in HNO₃/HF or use abrasive/stainless brushing to remove alpha case and heat tint before service; Type II anodizing or glass-bead peening are used for appearance and fatigue improvement.

Can ERTi-24-AW be formed, bent or molded?

Wire is supplied straightened or spooled; cold bending of the deposit is limited — bend radii ≥4t and prefer warm forming at 200–400 °C for weldment straightening.

What is the maximum service temperature of ERTi-24-AW?

ERTi-24-AW is rated for continuous use to about 350°C (662 °F). Strength falls off well before that limit — check the elevated-temperature data for load-bearing parts.

What is the difference between ERTi-24-AW and ERTi-24-STA?

AW is the default condition — default condition for filler-metal property reporting: all-weld-metal deposited under inert shielding with no PWHT. STA: used only where the whole weldment is heat treated with the Grade 24 base metal for higher strength; ductility and weld-zone toughness drop. Yield strength is 860 MPa in AW versus 1,020 MPa in STA.
