What is Ionomer Hard?
Ionomer Hard is Ionomer supplied in the Hard condition — highly neutralized, stiff and cut-resistant — the classic golf-ball cover and ski-base ionomer. Ionomer Hard has a yield strength of 20 MPa (2.9 ksi) and a tensile strength of 38 MPa (5.51 ksi) — weaker than 80% of polymer grades. Elongation at break is 260% and the elastic modulus is 0.4 GPa (0.058 Msi). Ionomer Hard has a density of 0.95 g/cm³ (0.0343 lb/in³), lighter than 75% of polymer grades. Its glass-transition temperature is -25°C (-13 °F).

Working with Ionomer Hard
Is Ionomer easy to machine?
Machinable but gummy and elastic — use sharp positive-rake tools, high speed, low feed and air/mist cooling; expect poor dimensional accuracy on thin sections.
Can Ionomer be welded?
Excellent heat-sealing, hot-tack, impulse, ultrasonic and hot-plate welding; bonds well to aluminum foil, nylon and PET in coextrusion/extrusion-coating.
Can Ionomer be formed, bent or molded?
Dry 3–4 h at 50–60 °C, melt 190–250 °C (never above ~260 °C to avoid ionic degradation/gel), cold mold 10–30 °C for gloss; blown/cast film and thermoforming run easily.
What surface finishes work on Ionomer?
Molds to a very high natural gloss; paints and inks need corona/flame treatment; not suitable for plating, and printing over the sealant layer should be reverse-printed on the carrier film.

Ionomer Hard — frequently asked
What is Ionomer Hard used for?
Ionomer Hard is typically used for golf ball covers, skin/blister packaging film, heat-seal layers for food packaging, ski boot shells and sporting goods, foam laminates and metal adhesion coatings. In short: toughest clear ethylene copolymer; best hot-tack seal layer; high-gloss abrasion resistance.
What is the yield strength of Ionomer Hard?
Ionomer Hard has a typical yield strength of 20 MPa (2.9 ksi) and a tensile strength of 38 MPa (5.51 ksi) — weaker than 80% of polymer grades. Strength varies by condition: see the 5 listed tempers.
Is Ionomer Hard easy to machine?
Not especially — machinability is rated fair (42/100, worse than 80% of polymer grades). Machinable but gummy and elastic — use sharp positive-rake tools, high speed, low feed and air/mist cooling; expect poor dimensional accuracy on thin sections.
Can Ionomer Hard be welded?
Yes — weldability is rated excellent (88/100). Excellent heat-sealing, hot-tack, impulse, ultrasonic and hot-plate welding; bonds well to aluminum foil, nylon and PET in coextrusion/extrusion-coating.
